If you want to scratch build the snorkel I have some excellent reference pics I could post this evening.

<< Do you think it will eventually end up using some parts of both? >>

This is a very real possibility. All of the stuff I've seen is impressive. As I said, I have the Modelbrass, Nautilus and Eduard kits, and I'm using parts from all three.
Remember there were a lot of VIICs built. And aside from design changes, over time, there were changes made by individual skippers. Pick your boat and time frame. Research everything you can, about the particular boat (not to mention the class, in general). And go for it.
If you're particularly ambitious (or lazy, depending on point of view), build a "one of / what if" design. That is, build the boat as you would have wanted it, if you were the skipper that was going to take her to sea.
That's the beauty of model building. You have absolute authority, in design and construction. You may get some static from the purists, but, who are you building it for? Them, or you? Unless you were commissioned to build a particular boat, she's yours. Follow your heart.

Greetings!
So far the only AM set I have is the WEM...I still can't decide on which deck to go with.
They both look great!
Do you think it will eventually end up using some parts of both?

The Engine Room and Conning Tower would be exactly what's needed to finish off this model. Of Course an 88, on par with John's (WEM) 20s, would be nice to have. But both are 6 months to a year away. I buy parts as I need them. There's less chance of getting caught, that way.
Wives don't understand, that you really will die, if you can't get the stuff you need to make the perfect model.
One more thing. If you plan to open the hatches, 7/16" OD plastic tubing, from Evergreen, is just about perfect (IMHO). Remember, the hatch assemblies were built and then welded in place. If the hatch seat became distorted )due to depth charges, or whatever) the entire thing had to be replaced. Therefore, the access tube walls had to be at the radius of the hatch assembly area. The access tube connected the pressure hull to the top of the casing. On the drawings, I have, they are shown on the forward torpedo room, lower conning tower and engine room hatches. On the upper conning tower hatch, if there is one, it's barely there. As I remember to hatch opening was <>6 inches from the access trunk walls.

Don't forget the conning tower upgrades from Warhammer. They are superb! I've got the upgrades you have, but also picked up the towers (2 in each kit, along with PE fret).

I'd also like to know about the barrels and scopes, although the Warhammer set has resin scopes and the attack scope has the stabilizing cables molded in.

In Germany, there is a company who makes the 2CM Flak barrels, a torpedo, and they tell me an 88 barrel is coming out in a couple of weeks. modellbau.schatton@online.de

Has anyone else had any luck in trying to obtain the machined gun barrels and scopes from Japan? My last email reply from Japan left it open as to if or when they'd be available again.

I'm about to order the pressure hull pieces myself. I like the piping detail, and the fact that the deck and upper hull will have something behind them. Thanks Jeff.

Has anyone heard anymore at all about a Turm IV or any other late war mod for the conning tower? (of course, the deck would have to be modified for a snorkel well...more work for Nautilus and Jason...) from Nautilus perhaps???

Don't forget there are rumours that there is a conning tower interior and an engine room interior coming out by cmk.

I'm doing pretty much the same as you are, I am ordering the wood deck today as I thought it was just a brass kit, but since it is wood, thats going to be unreal.

I also have the torpedo loading kit and the gun kit from wem.

I can't wait to see yours when built.

the model brass kit I got the other day is amazing, very happy the grills in the fron and rear are in this one, drilling them out was to much a pain.

Three U-Boat upgrades in, four to go

As with my last thread, I've already posted this elsewhere. Some of you, also, use that other site, but, I like to share with as many as possible. If you have specific questions, go for it. I'll answer as best I can.

OK. I've got three upgrade kits in. Nautilus, Modelbrass and Eduard. Each has something to offer.

The Nautilus wood deck is a superb piece of work. really beautiful. That, I'm definitely going to use. Also some of the small fittings are cherry. It was worth the price.

The Modelbrass conning tower deck and deck fittings and detail will also be used. Another set that justifies the price. It was a close call, on the deck, but I like wood.

The Eduard stuff just got here today. Equisite! It appears to be mild steel rather than brass.
This is all the stuff I wanted, that wasn't part of the other two. I'll cut the fore and aft deck off the Nautilus deck and the tip off the Revell deck. Then I can use the Eduard fore and aft decks. The rest of parts border on the unbelievable. The vents, gratings, overboard discharge and intake fittings are beautiful. They look like they were made by taking the originals, soaking them, in hot water, and, then throw them in a drier till they shrink down to the proper scale.
One thing, though, I'll probably have to use 0.75mm plastic stock, to shim the decks up to hull level. It looks, to be, half the thickness of the brass deck.
At over $50 it's pricey (almost the same price as the boat), but, I think, worth it. It looks like Eduard got the Modelbrass and Nautilus kits, identified the few parts they thought they could do better, and then, made all the stuff, that wasn't there.
And, last, but far from least, they did a great job on the instructions. I don't see any problems, there. If I find any, I'll pass it on.

One thing obvious is, that with the Eduard stuff, I'm going to have to fabricate a horizontal bulkhead, over the torpedo tubes and cutouts.

Now all I need is the WEM kit and the Yankee Modelworks hull. I ordered the two CMK interior kits, this morning. With luck, I should be able to start, serious, construction in January. For now, I'll have to settle with cutting holes and installing vents and grills and stuff.
I'm letting things dribble in. If "The Boss" ever figures out what I'm up to, (not to mention the cost) she'll rip my lungs out and beat me to death with them.
