1/350 scale wood decks
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 19, 2004 12:58 PM
I would like to know if anyone makes wood decks for any of the ships below in 1/350 scale .

Titanic
Bismark
New Jersey (1980s fit)
Yamato
Fletcher

I have seen the wood Hornet deck , are there plans for more ?
Could anyone make a decal set that looks like the wood deck planks in that scale to fit the kits ?

Thanks Eric

goliath scorpion,

The Fletcher's all had steel decks as far as I can tell from my research. They did how ever have alot of the anti-skid surfaces. I would also be interested to know if there are any wood deck out their also.

Nautilus models has been working up the wood decks. I remember one his postings which indicated that he had started a deck for the Tamiya Missouri working from plans before realizing how far off the kit was from them. Last I heard he was starting over using the outline of the kit decks vs the official plans.

On the steel decks I've used 600/800/1200 grit paper to do anti-slip surface. Can you get this to work?

White Ensign Models produce photoetch decking for the Bismarck in 1/350 scale. It is mainly designed to supplement the lack of deck detail on the super structures on the Tamiya Bismarck. I have bought this set, and it is extremely high quality! Follow the link below and scroll down about half way:

http://www.whiteensignmodels.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_1_350_Scale_Photo_Etch_40.html

Their website is a bit wierd sometimes, so if it seems like it is going wrong, then just wait a moment and it should sort itself out, but if not then just go to whiteensignmodels.com, enter the catalogue, and follow the links to 1/350 photoetch in the "White Ensign Models Products" section

James Corley (Nautilus) has indicated that he will be doing additional subjects in laser cut wood, but at this point, I don't know what those would be. I do recall something being mentioned about the Tamiya 350th kits, but I could be mistaken.

As for Fletchers, their decks were all steel. As indicated, they had anti-skid on them, but in 1.350 scale, I would recommend trying to get your hands on some of the Dunagain decals cut specifically for this kit. They have both types of anti-skid, the long strips found on the early ships, and the smaller rectangular sections found on most ships after mid-43.

Check in the model railroad section of your hobby shop, I remember that Micro-Scale did decals of wood grain for signs and things like that, they were an entire sheet of wood grain.
