You might want to take a look at a forum discussion we had a few days ago under the title "real cloth sails." It's a few lines down from this one.

Also try Gunze Sangyo Sail color.Then dry brush in grays and dark tan to your liking.
The Gunze is and Acrylic.

I use tamiya Buff, it's acrylic but I put a few drop of acetone to dull it down. Floquil Antique white is a good shade too. Never use white unless you plan on staining or weathering them.

Also, what's the best way to simulate the shading effect and bring out the volume of the sail? I was considering mixing the base color with a darker brown or gray and then airbrushing the sail from the "bottom" direction to create shading. Does anyone have any suggestions on which specific colors to use?
