Yankee Modelworks 1/72 Type VII Upper Pressure Hull - worth the price ?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 8:38 PM
I'm building my 1/72 Revell U-Boat with the Nautilis Wood Deck and drilling out the hull slots, and I was wondering how much of the Yankee Modelworks Upper Hull you would actually see through the holes once the model is all closed up. Is it worth the price after forking out for the Wood Decking, PE Sets and Warhammer Conning Tower Update ? How much does it add to the visual of the model ? Any advice from modellers who have used this kit would be much appreciated.

I have it...and I intend to use it, as you can see straight through the hull in some spots, especially aft of the conning tower.

My logic is thus...if you bought the kit, all the PE, and the wooden deck, what's another $40? I spent double that watching my local high school team play the Pats on Sunday...oh wait, those were my Colts!!

I would also recommend Steve Nuttall's turned brass scopes and gun barrels, and prop shafts as well...beautiful stuff!

That's what I thought Jeff, I've spent this much - what the hell !

Also, do you have a website for Steve Nuttall. Everywhere I see in the post have links to a Modelwarship forum link, but it seems to be a broken link now.

Thanks,

Adam.

I have the set. I have test fitted it into my hull, and it fits perfectly. My castings were bubble free, little flash to speak of, and arrived in about a week of ordering it.

If you plan on using a aftermarket deck, or opening the casement holes, this fills the void nicely.

If you want, go to modelsbymickster and order it from him for a little less.

Could these pressure hull inserts be used on another 1/72 U-Boat model? I'm thinking of the Combat Model's IXC vacuformed kit.

thanks,

Sean,

I can say with confidence that it wouldn't work on a Type IX boat. Different hull form altogether, and the IX is considerably longer than the VII.

In theory, it can be easily scratchbuilt by bowing sheet stryene inside the hull. From there, you can add your piping details and weld seams, etc. to the outside. You'd need a decent set of plans or photos of Type IXs under construction for the details.

Combat Models kits are vacuformed kits with basic shapes and outlines, no details are provided.

They are carried by Robert's Models, who advertise in FSM, take a look at last month's issue, I'm pretty sure they advertised in there. I'm not sure if they've put these kits back into production or not.

Thanks for the advice Jeff. Thom, I've talked to the folkes at Mayfair Hobbies who carry Robert's/Combat Models and they still produce these kits, although none are kept in stock, their all special orders and can take up to six weeks. The IXC kit doesn't come with any deck fittings or anything, so lots of scratch building needed. I'm planning on picking up a set of IXC plans to go with the hull.
