Love it! I'm not sure which was more ridiculous from the historical standpoint - the movie or the kit.
That Aurora box art that appears in the poster is for a reissue, which, I believe, appeared in the sixties. The kit is considerably older. For the reissue Aurora hired a fine marine artist, John Steel, to paint the box art. Steel must have found himself in an awkward position. His painting looks like a real Viking ship - and therefore bears no resemblance whatever to what was in the box.
The kit was downright juvenile, but it attracted lots of people into the hobby - including me. I can remember building it when I was in grade school - and quite a few times later. I have no idea how much time I spent on those wonderful little crew figures at the oars. And dig those guys with the horns on their helmets! (One of the first things one learns when studying Norse culture is that horned helmets have nothing to do with it. Wagner operas yes; Vikings no.)
Great exercise in nostalgia. Thanks, Big Jake.
