OK, I am finally getting around to the PT 109 kit that every modeler seems destined to build once they take up the hobby. Just in case my screen name didn't give it away, I'll let you in on a little secret, I don't build much of anything that floats unless floating is just one of the possibilities for a landing area.

My question to all of you is how good is the Revell kit? I saw it for $5 and thought that it would be a fun build. I haven't started looking for reference yet, but I figure that the only problem I will have there is trying to sort through the mountian that is probably out there. I expect that I will need to do some work on the torpedo tubes and the gun mounts as well as replacing the hand rails with wire. I just want this to be a fun build to exercise my skills after a recent middle east vacation, so I am not looking to superdetail it but I do want it to look good.

OK Take the scapel in one hand and .......

First thing none of them had panked decks so either cut out another deck or scrap away the "planking" effect from the kit part; secondly don't .... actually Don is right there are several threads here on the same question with some excellent answers. WEM have a nice p/e kit if you do decide to do that little "extra".

Hey thanks for the reference. Sorry to bother you with what appears to be a well visited thread. I just got back from a year in the big sandbox and wanted something a little out of my lane to play with and just make look good if not completely accurate.

Okay, if it won't make a good kit of the 109, can other boats be modeled from it?

It sounds to me like it would take a good bit of work to to build an accurate model of ANY PT boat. It should still be a quick, fun build to make it look good enough for the shelf.

With the stuff you get in the box you can make a PT 109 boat, but if you want to make Pt 109 as she looked the night she was rammed you have work to do.
The key word on PT's in the Pacific is "Personality."
Almost every boat took on the personality of the skipper and crew, Big gun on the front, more .50's here. Depth charge racks. . .or not.
By the time Kennedy took the 109 she was a battered old veteran of the Pacific as were most of the boats in the squadron.

You might check FSM,s index of past issues as there have been several articles on modeling PTs including on article on how the PT 109 was fitted the night she was sunk. Sorry, can't remember exact dates.

I started mine about 11 months ago with great gusto, got the p/e and then peated out. Maybe time to start again.

Well, you can now get the Army 37mm anti-tank gun that the 109 boat (and others) carried on the bow. We have it available in white metal with photoetch parts (PE 7216). If you're modelling a late-war boat, we now have the USN Mk.3 40mm Bofors mount carried by US PTs, again in white metal with photoetch (PE 7217). We'll be doing more PT parts as time allows. We also have accurate paints for USN PTs, including MTB Green and the elusive "Tropical Green" which was a field mix, available in our Colourcoats enamels.
