just wishing/dreaming
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 11, 2005 9:00 AM
... was just reading different forums etc. hear at FSM and the ? about PT109 got me thinking: I usually build planes, but once in a great while ships also. Anyways, I think I built the old 109 kit ages ago(I'm 42 BTW), and I would love to see a new model of any US PT boat! Revell Germany did a great S boat recently in 1/72- SO HOW ABOUT A PT !! and since I'm dreaming- in !/35 !! Then I can put it next to my River Rat boat from Tamiya.

There has been a noticable trend lately for large scale kits. 1/72 scale, while small for aircraft and armor, is considered a large scale for ships. Trumpter has dove in the market of 1/32 and 1/24 scale aircraft, and 1/200 scale ships, and Revell of Germany has released the Type VII and S-100 in 1/72 scale. Hasegawa is releasing 1/32 Fw-190s and Bf-109s like crazy, and their new Ki-84 is getting alot of attention. This trend towards larger scaled kits, and the fact that the old PT boat has been a cornerstone of the model industry, like the old Revell 1/429 Arizona, and a few others, indicates that there's a need or desire for this kit to be brought up to current standards.

I think its a matter of time before we see a new PT boat from someone. The Elcos and Higgins boats, as well as the Huckins, were quite numerous and used in all theatres of the war. There's lots of room for variations of fits as well. I personally would have to buy several... Smile [:)]

... I hope you're right. A new 1/72 PT Boat would look great next to revell's "S" and airfix's "E" boats. by the way, one of my favorite films is that one with John Wayne as Navy Ensign in a PT Squardron, I think it was called "The Expendables" or similar.

You had the movie name right, was a good movie for its date. Would also like to see some new PT Boat kits. I remember when Revell brought out the PT-109 when I was a kid(believe is was 1960). Think they may have put it out once for "Mc Hale's Navy. Their Higgins boat is even older.
Lindberg did one in 1/32nd scale but I believe it is unavailable right now, with work it can look good

Hmm.. Just how many "large scale" PT boats (of either manufacturer) would I buy? Well let's just say I could NOT could them on 1 hand.

Midwest is offering an Almost ready to run PT-109.
A couple people have done mods and aftermarket details to really create a nice model.
