I'm not a fan of Corel kits, but on the basis of the photo on the website this one looks better than most. The person who built the one in the photo apparently didn't understand rigging (the upper yards are in the wrong places), but otherwise it looks reasonably believable.

I saw a built-up version of a ship's cross-section like this in a friend's house once that was especially nice: he'd left off the kit base and had hung the model on a wall. That struck me as an attractive and ingenious way to display it.

The think that interests me most about that Model Expo sale is the Taig Micro-Lathe, priced at $300 including basic excessories. I've been thinking for some time about a replacement for my ancient Unimat, for which spare parts are no longer obtainable. From what I can tell, the Taig Lathe is a good, serious machine with a great deal of potential for model building - perhaps not as powerful or sturdy as the Sherline lathe, but a good tool for many purposes. That price is outstanding.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

I recieved an email from Modelexpo telling me of a sale on wooden ship models. One of them that was on sale was the VICTORY CROSS SECTION in 1/98th. They have it on sale for $89.99, Thats a good deal because it seems to always list for between $159.-165.00 everywhere else. So I bought one. They only have 19 left! I've built this before and donated it to the Marines Toys-for-Tots Program. I've been wanting to re-add this model to my collection for a while now.

Here is the link to the sale page:

Here is what they have to say about the kit:
"This highly detailed cross section of Admiral Nelson's flagship recreates five decks of life aboard the H.M.S. Victory. Correct hull shape is guaranteed by pre-formed poplar plywood hull sections, ready for planking. Kit contains a fine selection of walnut, beech and boxwood components. Wood, brass and copper fittings are all ready to use. Silk flag, 15 water casks and display pedestal are also included. Even if this is your first model, you'll have no trouble following Corel's plans and instructions."

Entry Level / Width (spar section) 14"/ Height 28"/ Scale 1:98, Kit No. SM24
