From this pic at Beau's link-- it looks like the rear elevator has an outline around it....although I am unsure of the date of the pic....
*Edit*-- Link didn't work-- but it the pic of the Enterprise returning to the US for repairs....

Wow! You're right...I never noticed that thin outline around the elevator. Although it could just be the edge of the elevator, it is about the same thickness and shade as the deck striping! Nice work!

Mike,

From my research the only striping on World War II carrier decks was the fore and aft guidelines that were painted in a contrasting color (light gray, white, or even yellow in some cases). For the USS Enterprise (CV-6), I think light gray will get you there. Flight deck markings are an enigmatic subject, and you would need a specific photograph and date to model your deck from.

The World War II U.S. Navy was not like today's Navy when it came to safety markings on aircraft elevators. To my knowledge the elevators did not have warning striping of any kind--the flight deck crews had to keep their wits about them on the flight deck, the hangar deck, and the elevators. The metal parts of the flight deck (tie down strips, expansion joints, and the like) were finished to the same deck blue color as the flight deck, although wear would be different between metal and wooden surfaces. The wooden flight deck is stained, while the metal portions would be painted.

OK OK...I'll settle just for how long and wide the stripes on the deck should be....please.

Carrier deck question....
Posted by Jeeves on Thursday, March 3, 2005 12:58 PM
I am trying to finish up my WWII Carrier Deck base from Eduard....however-- I am actually trying to recreate the Enterprise as opposed to the Essex class the base represents....I have painted it the required blue...and thanks to Jeff have (at least I think) successfully detailed the tie-down strips. I know the striping should be light gray- but I have a question about the edge of the elevator. Should it have a stripe around it?? Also-- the detail around the edge of the elevator-- is it also gray/silver in color or should it remain blue?? I wish there were instructions for painting in with the base- but nope.

The info I have had so far mainly comes from here-- http://www.shipcamouflage.com/5_3.htm .... but they don't mention anything about the smaller details...
