German WWI destroyer colors
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 4, 2005 9:06 AM
A few weeks ago someone here posted a question about the Mirage U-boat kits, so I picked up one of their little ship models to see if they are any good -- the V106 WWI German destroyer in 1/400.

The instructions say to paint the whole thing a lightish slate grey, and below the waterline black. Some questions on these instructions.

1) Didn't the Germans paint their destroyers black in the first two years of the war?

2) If so, were the decks black too -- were all horizontal surfaces black?

3) Since the Germans painted black below the waterline too, does this mean the ships were entirely black? [:0]

4) If/when they were black, did they wear ID numbers, etc, and if so what color were these?

Thanks for any help -- I like early war builds for the High Seas Fleet rather than the rather depressing late war fleet.

According to the latest information, the hull & superstructure were painted overall a dark grey-black, the equivalent of RAL 7021. We have a match for that in our Colourcoats enamels: KM 07. No info on the underwater hull.

We have no minimum order on paints, and we ship worldwide.

Cheers,

Thanks John, I don't paint in enamels or I would definitely order from you. I hold your products and services in high regard.

Hi, I built the mirage v-106 boat last year (nice kit ,pe railing sux, use hypo needle f/ torpedo tubes & gun barrels) all the research I did and it seems the overall dark grey with black bottom (no boot stripe! Yay!) was the consensus. After ww1 they were transfered to polish navy, but I never looked at that color. Use Tom's 1/400 railing or GMM or White Ensign, the stuff with the kit is a pain. Have fun, its a cool shape.

Hi all, returned to active modelling and this forum after a decade.Indifferent

my current project is this nice little ship, and couldn't find any documented paint scheme for it, apart from the interpretations of the kit instructions. Can anyone please help confirming the paint scheme, and respond the questions of the previous post?

Thanks heaps.
