Decal flags-- How to handle?
Posted by cdclukey on Monday, March 7, 2005 8:26 AM
Hi folks. Though this is a decal question, I'm posting it in ships because ships are always flying some flag and planes, tanks and starships seldom are!

Right now I'm building the Gelncoe USS Oregon, my first ship model, and I was wondering how y'all handle flags that come printed on the decal sheet (as opposed to the type that come as paper printed on both sides.)

Do I use an intervening material between the decals, and if so, what's the best one to use? I'd hate to think I have to apply a decal to the back of another decal! Also, how do you work in the rope that the flag is attached to?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I basically handle them the same way....with the exception that I use white Elmers glue to soften them and as they get soft mold them around wires. poles etc...as the glue becomes thick due to drying I carefully shape them to the contour breeze would make them.......it's tricky but it works.......dalucas

I usually fold the decal over a small piece of aluminum foil, with the jackstaff (flagpole) in place. Once the decal has set and dried, I'll bend it to simulate the flag blowing in the wind, or just leave it slack. Either way, the foil allows for bends and curves. Be sure to hit it with setting solution so it doesn't crack the decal.

Great! Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm going to try the foil method on this one.
