Fujimi Kitty Hawks
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 4:47 PM
Has anyone built any of the Fujimi Kitty Hawk kits, I have seen two at Squadron. Both are on sale but besides the product number and price they really don't say what the difference is between the two. I've checked other web-stores because I thought one might be a 70's version but I don't think this is the case. Anyways, I have a Italeri 1/700 Kitty Hawk with the following
Skywave Equip for modern ship I
FlagshipModels Nimitiz Class Super set
Tom ModelWorks 1/700 Scale figures
A set of Pitroad Carrier Based Aircraft
x2 set of Fujimi CVW-5 Aircraft.
So my next questions is, if anyone has built one of these is it worth the money or should I stick with what I got. Just browsing at the the Italeri kit the island structure looks wrong among a few other things. Anyways I want to not have to do too much scratch buliding if I don't have to.thanks

I built the FU44130 kit. It's a nice build str8 out of the box, depicting her in her 90's configuration. All sponsons, radomes, CIWS etc are provided requiring no scratch building. And you wont have to scratchbuild a hangar deck, 1 is provided in the kit. The CVW-5 aircraft set w/decals is also included. The other kit indicates there are white metal and PE parts included, hence the slightly higher price. The Fujimi kit is 1:700 vs the Italeri 1:720.
For me, it was well worth the purchase price to build the Fujimi kit than to do the major surgery with aftermarket parts to upgrade the Italeri kit. Hope this helps.

I think you'll like it. I also did Constellation, another OOB build. Parts were provided for the slightly different CIWS platform locations to build her in her final 2003 cruise configuration and correct a/c decals for CVW-2. Dressing either up with PE is optional, but the surgery wont be nearly as extensive or expensive as an Italeri.

I bought the Kitty hawk when it fist came out. I think it's a nice kit but a glaring error at the time was the complete lack of life raft canisters. I've heard they released a seperate set of these in brass but I've never seen them. Do the newer releases include the rafts?

Hey! Redbird1. You say you did a version of the Constellation? Would be interested in seeing it and your work. Possibly would want a model of "Connie". I'm a former crewmember. Maybe can link up later Thanks! grapeape

You're right about the life raft cannisters in the origional kit. I think the new release with the white metal/PE parts has em.

Hi grape. Sorry, I dont have a digicam, so I cant take/post pix yet. Fujimi did 2 versions of Connie. 1 in her modern configuration, the other as she was during her '72 Nam cruise. Appropriate airwings/decals provided with each. As Gary pointed out above, the life raft cannisters are missing, dont know if an upgraded kit has been released.
When were you aboard Connie? Can I assume by your screen name you were a refueler?
I can show you the 1:350 Connie I had done for me by All Wood Wings, if you're interested.
