LST 1191 info
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 21, 2005 4:40 PM
Does any one know of a kit for the USS Racine which is LST 1191 or a similar ship? She was a Newport class amphibious assault ship that the US Navy commisioned back around 1970 and is the boat my dad was on during Vietnam. Unfortunately, I don't think she or any of the other 16 ships in her class saw much action, which makes them a bit less known about. I am also interested in any reference material about the Racine or the Newport class LSTs in general.

Norman Friedman's U.S. Amphibbious Ships & Craft: an Illustrated Design History (Naval Institute Press) has a rear 3/4's view of the Racine on page 343 and a small general profile and main deck plan on the following page. Might want to check the Floating Drydock's website to see if any better plans are available.

And the model that seems to be available

Okay. Thanks everyone. I was curious because eventually I want to build a model of the Racine for my dad.
