That is an excellent site indeed!!
An example picture of the "Big E". Well, the "USS Ronald Reagan" and the "USS George Bush" are actually larger and heavier, but who's countingBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]
Although this will always remain a legendary ship. And I have to add that she looks much better without those gigantic "bill-board" radar dishes...
Cool feature for the images on that site, they are all dated. This one was taken on Sep 2, 2004. Very useful for reference Manic!!


BTW, what's the deal with those new "Hawks", the newest Naval helo, the MH-60S Knighthawk uses the standard rear wheel of the Blackhawk... Not very efficient on a ship I imagine... Although I have read somewhere that this feature gives the Knighthawk more available cargospace.... This is what I mean:

Please check www.news.navy.mil.

That is the Navy's media canter's web site and contains over 12,000 photos of ships, planes and people. There will be lots of Big E photo's as well.

Currently, the ship is at Northrop Grumman Newport News, undergoing an availability, which will leave new changes. The navy site will still be the place to check for the most up to date stuff.

Durring the 1979-1981 complex overhaul and refuling the Enterprise had many changes of appearance. The big bilboard radars on the super structure were removed (they were the SPS-32, and SPS-33). The mast and and the crown, which was old ECM equipment The bridge looks more like a Nimitz class, but still a boxey appearance. What was added was the SPS-48E 3D air search, SPS-49 long range air search, SPN-43 airtrafic control radar, SPS-67 surface search radar. Phalanx CIWS, Mk 29 GMLS for NATO Sea Sparrow. Thats some of it. The White dome looking thing is part of some sort of landing aid system.

I'd say mid 90's for the SH-3's and as for those other items those may have been changed in 90 or 91 when she went in for her refit. BTW is your Enterprise fitted with the "BeeHive" Radar antenna if it is that was removed during her refit and replaced with a mast making it look like every other carrier in the fleet.

Well, I have myself what's left of my half-built Tamiya 1/350 CVN-65 after its having lived in the garage during my little Iraq trip, and I'm back on it. Fortunately, I've found more broken-off parts than missing, so I should be in good shape. (Also have the Gold Metal Models Photo-etched set which is driving me spare, with all the bends!). This however, is nothing to do with my question whatsoever.

I'm trying to figure out how best to accurately paint and equip the thing. Near as I can tell, the ship as kitted is somewhere in the late '80s. The distinguishing things I can find offhand are the gold-painted anchors of late, the deck number between the forward catapults being in outline or filled white, some recently added and very prminent white commo domes mounted on the front side of the island. Does anyone have any idea what dates these items were changed around? Also, I would like to know when Enterprise's SH-3s were replaced with SH-60s. Can't go putting the wrong aircraft on it, after all.
