My query about resin kits (I am in the midst of my first, a 1/700 Victory ship) is how do you get the paint to cover up the super glue used to attach rails, etc? I can't seem to get the paint to do that despite numerous coats, so my model has little shiny patches all over it.

Depends, you can find prefinished bases at taxidermy supply shops, award and engraving shops, and some craft stores. Many of the on-line model ship suppliers (Model Expo comes to my mind) also sell bases and case kits. You can get pre-cut and shaped bases at most hobby and craft stores and some hardware stores. I have found that places that make and sell kitchen cabinets will sell door panels that are made out of many different types of wood and just need the finish applied. These also make nice bases.

Then you can also make your own base by buying the wood, cutting it to size, routing out the edge, and then staining and finishing it.Smile [:)]

For a full hull model, I'd get the bottom of the hull cleaned up (remove gate, fill bubbles, etc) and get it mounted to the display base as soon as possible. If you're using brass finals, then you can do them fairly soon. I'd paint the hull the gray you are going to use, do the red bottom, then mount it and proceed from there. Mask over the wood and finals so you don't get errant glue or paint on them. If you're going to use keel blocks, it's much the same.

Building a Resin Kit

I have purchsed my first resin kit an will attempt to build it in a few months for the Pearl Harbor build. My question is how does one handle the construction and handling of the kit while inder construction. The hull of the kit (Commander Series four stack destroyer, which I intend to build as the USS Ward) is a one piece resin casting that has a strip/block of resin down the length of the keel. Do I remove it first and go from there - will the hull sit flat so I can work on the upper works of the kit - or do I use it as a base/handle as I build the rest of the model? Should I build some kind of cradle or base to rest it in during the construction? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
