Z Class Destroyer
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 9, 2005 11:46 PM
I'm building the 1/700 scale Tamiya Z Class (Z37-39) German Destroyer for a compition my model club is partaking in. It has to be an out of the box model with the choice of 2 paint jobs. One is the plain grey the other is the splinter style. The instructions only show the plain grey paint job. I was wondering if anyone knew of where I can get a copy of the splinter style paint job. Any help would be appricated.

The back jacket cover for M.J. Whitley's 'Destroyer!" has schemes for 13 Zs (one side only), including Z31 in 1944, Z32 in 1943, Z33 in 1943, Z37 in 1943 and Z39 in 1943. Z31-33 were Type 36As, as were Z37 and Z39, and could be built from the same kit.

Osprey's "German Destroyers 1939-45 has B/W photo for Z39 in the "second half of the war". It is a different scheme than shown on the Whitley book jacket.

MJ Whitley's "Destroyers of World War Two", has 4 B/W photos with camo, including Z32 and Z37 in 1943 (same side as the book jacket)

Between these refs., both port and starboard views are only available for Z32, Z5 and Z7 (need both Whitley books).

Like all WW2 destroyers, there were changes in AA armament over time. Camo and guns should match.

Regards

Alan
