USS CONWAY (DD 507) is the second ship of the fleet to be named in honor of William Conway, Quartermaster, United States Navy. The second CONWAY's keel was laid 5 November 1941 and launched 16 August 1942 by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Frank E. Beatty. The destroyer was placed in commission 9 October 1942, Commander Nathaniel S. Prime, USN, in command.

The CONWAY saw action in WW2, Korea, Vietnam and participated, as a recovery ship, in the "Apollo" space program. She never lost a man to the enemy. On 25 June 1946, following her participation in WW2, CONWAY was decommissioned. Recommissioned 8 November 1950 as a DDE, she reverted to her original DD designation 1 July 1962. The CONWAY made several voyages to the Pacific, Mediterranean and Great Lakes Ports of Call. On 15 November 1969, CONWAY was stricken from the register of ships. She was sunk as a target with 5" gunfire by USS HENLEY (DD-762) 26 June 1970.
She was a valiant ship. Her proud record of service in three wars was one to be envied by others who followed. CONWAY's honored grave is 149.5 nautical miles due east of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay in 10,210 feet of water.

Since the early 1980's, former sailors of the CONWAY have been searching for others who've served aboard her. Their purpose being both reunion and fellowship. The CONWAY Veteran's Association was formed in 1983. Today, it is a tax exempt organization over 600 strong. Annual reunion and membership information can be obtained by sending ones name, home address and dates of shipboard service to:

nothing about being hit.

Thanks guys very much. I'm not sure what year I will represent. I'll have to ask my dad. I know my grandpa was on a ship that got hit by a torpedo, but I'm not sure if that was the Conway. Do you know if the Conway was ever hit? I saw a website that said the conway has never lost a man, so probably not. I'll have to find out from my dad when he served aboard that ship. I have never built a ship yet. Any opinion on wether an aircraft carrier or a destroyer would be better to do first? Thanks for your input and advice!

Mike,

Conway (DD-507) is one of the early war round-bridge Fletchers. You can model her early in her WW2 career by using the 1/350 Tamiya kit, pretty much straight from the box. You can model her mid-late war by adding the Tom's Modelworks update set to the kit. This provides you with a square bridge conversion (which you don't use), but also converts the forward 20mm guns to Mk I 40mm, and adds the midship 40mm mounts between the funnels.

If you're modeling her post FRAM, then you need to do some scratchbuilding.

Let me know if you need any assistance, as I wrote a book on Fletchers a few years ago. It's available from White Ensign Models, Floating Drydock, Hannants, and other mail-order shops. I've also begun to see it in small shops around the country. It's the Warship Perspectives Fletcher, Gearing and Sumner Class Destroyers in WW2.

I want to build some ships that my family members have been on. My dad was on the U.S.S. Ranger(CVA 61) I found that one at my LHS. But my grandpa was on the U.S.S. Conway, a destroyer. Are there sites that I can search for a particular model? I might just have to get the same class of destroyer and modify for the Conway using reference material. Also any advice on building a carrier would be appreciated, it will be my first attempt at building a ship. Thanks
