I got a Revell 1/83 kit at Hobby Lobby last October for $10.79 on the clearance rack.  I reckon that would be the small one.

Really nice figures in the kit.

Yes I'm six foot plus and I really enjoyed my trip to Plymouth. They had a re-enactor playing Bradford in the main cabin.

He asked me where I was from, I replied "California". That puzzled him, so I explained that it was in New Spain.

"Aye, yeh be a papist, then?" Sort of un-PC but true, and very funny.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Either Revell Mayflower is an excellent kit. The larger, "Quick Build" version is just a pantographed-up version of the smaller one.

Be aware that it's actually a scale model of the Mayflower II, whose accuracy has been questioned in recent years. (It was built in the fifties.) It's an acknowledged fact that the deck spaces are about a foot too high for authenticity (to keep visitors from bashing their heads on the beams). How important that is, is of course up to the individual modeler.

There's a large one on eBay right now, in what seems to be a 1980 boxing. I'd swear the box says 20" long, and price is not bad. I'm not getting it because of the shipping costs to Spain, but you might be interested.

I had built the larger Revell Mayflower when it was first released and gave it to my grandparents.  I have no idea whatever became of the model after they died, but I remember it as a very pleasant model to build. It would be nice to find another one. I may have to consider the Heller kit if I can find the money.  Perhaps I will go plow a few driveways!

My guess is that Revell´s simplified build version is based on the smaller one, and Heller reboxed the first (it's just too large to be the smaller one).

BTW, if the model's length corresponds to the "overall length" of the Mayflower II, the scale on Heller's kit would be roughly 1/67, would be nice to work with.

It's interesting. The photos of the Heller kit look almost exactly like the parts in the smaller Revell kit. I wonder . . .

Nice to know. A search revealed that Revell's kit was 1/96, so it shouldn't be too hard to find aftermarket blocks and deadeyes for it. That Heller Mayflower is just too bloody expensive, I'd rather put the money towards the savings for the 1/100 Victory...

The Heller Golden Hind is the old Revell kit re-boxed.  It is a nice kit although I don't know the true scale.

Gents, thread is from 2005 and maybe he doesn't have the kit anymore - perhaps I should have created a new thread rather than replying to this old one. Sorry about that.

Jake,

I am definitely interested if you have an extra one of the larger Revell kits.  What are you interested in as a return?

I thought it would be better to re-float this thread, rather than start a new one.

I've found this kit at www.super-hobby.es/.../Mayflower.html

And am pretty sure it's a re-boxing of Revell's "simplified assembly", 20+ inch kit, not Airfix's.

That mounting stand is pretty recognizable - it's exactly the same my simplified Constitution comes with. And the wood grain detail seems a bit too heavy for an Airfix kit. Plus the plastic shrouds and ratlines, the low part count... all seems to point in that direction.

I'm really, really tempted to get it, as from what I've read it's a very nice kit, but it's rather expensive :(

Wondering if Heller's Golden Hind (which seems to be a much larger scale than the stated 1/200 figure) makes a nice kit? It's much cheaper.

John is right the Heller kit is a redo of the Airfix kit.As far as rating the kits for me anyway .1.Imai 1/70 scale 2.Trumpeter 1/60 scale 3.Revells box scale (both kits)4.Airfix/Heller 1/180 scale. And the way I'm rating is by how well the kits go together, the amount of sanding and filling to be done, the type of plastic used,(Revell and Airfix very brittle)and the overall look of the finished model. The Trumpeter kit not quite done but looks good.Hope that helps.I have build all the above.

Jake -

I think I'll pass for the moment; too much other stuff in the "to be done" pile. But thanks for the offer. It's good to know the kits are there.

If you've got both the Revell kits there's probably little reason to get the Airfix/Heller one - except to fill out your collection. It's hard for me to believe that kit could possibly top the Revell ones.

I'm pretty sure it's the old Airfix kit. I've never bought one, but it seems to have the general reputation of being a basically sound, but simplified, product.

Oh, for a reissue of the Revell Mayflower - in either of its two scales. That was one of the nicest plastic sailing ship kits ever.

Heller Mayflower?
Posted by Big Jake on Friday, April 15, 2005 6:36 AM
I've noticed in the past few days several models of the Heller Mayflower have shown up on eBay. According to box info the scale is 1/150th. , the model builds out to be 19+" long and is being sold at hobby stores for around $50.00 generally.

Has anyone built the version?
How does it stack up against the Trumpeter version?
Anyone have pics of the build?

Thanks
Jake
