It's a matter of religious belief

I believe in the Gato/Balao/ Tench class.
And that's because I don't think Revell has decided yet.
Stand up, true believers, and let's have a nice loud, Hallaluya!

Basically, a US Fleet boat is a WWII US submarine. The Gato, Balao and Tench class boats were considered Fleet Boats.
They were called Fleet Boats due to their long legs (extended operational range) and good speed. And, were intended to operate ahead of the fleet as it's eyes (think Cavalry). But, they proved to be much better operating alone, or in small groups, on the enemy's home turf.
Many were later modified, based on what was learned from the German type XXI boats. The ones, so modified, were known as Guppies. The name was derived from the acronym for Greater Underwater Propulsion Program (GUPP).
Personally, I think the Guppies are prettier. I'll modify my RoG 1:72 US Boat to Guppy configuration.

I won't be making the Nationals, this year. And, I doubt she'll be done by then. Too many projects and grandkids, not enough time.
The only trip in my future, right now, is a ship's reunion in Key West in 06.

Sounds good Mike, can we expect to see it at the Nationals??

I'm hoping to have mine done by then, but I won't be taking it quite as far as you are with the interior...strictly an external build for me.

CMK and YMW upgrades to RoG 1:72 U-boat

I've now got all the parts for my RoG U-boat. The CMK torpedo and control rooms and the Yankee Model Works hull tops came in this week. all three were everything the pictures showed, and more. They're well worth the price, and Squadron Shop got them to me in short order, less than a week after ordering..
The hull tops require some grinding, to get them to fit over the CMK compartments. The stern part only needs a little grinding along the edges to let it sit at the correct height. It's easier than trying to determine exactly where to put the plastic support strips, for the correct position of the unground part.
The forward and midship, parts require more extensive reworking. the forward section I ground out to the shape of the upper hull, so that it is now about 1/16" thick. On the midship section I only ground the edges, the forward end enough to sit down over the after end of the torpedo room. I ,then, ground out the part that is over the Control room. I cannot tell yet, but it may be necessary to grind back the starboard edge of the upper hull part, or even remove the section over the control room. Alternatively, I may grind off the "Steel Plate' at the outer top edge of the control room. That decision will have to wait until the model is further along.
I, also, ground out the torpedo loading hatch and trunk from the upper hull. I'll let the torpedo room trunk project through it and add the open hatch, later.
In the control room it was necessary to drill out the two periscope penetrations, the attack periscope well penetration, in the control room deck, the attack scope housing and some of the scope well housing, in the ballast tank..
What? You thought I was goin'a just glue Steve's exquisite scopes in place and leave them at that? Not hardly. RoG made provisions for raising and lowering the scopes, I ain't givin' it up.
Now. If RoG will just hold of on the US Fleet boat, for a year, or so. Just until I can finish this thing.
