USS Ranger, CV(A?)-61 "Top Gun" Forrestal Class. I remember because I read the credits. I've have watched this movie dozens of times! I even have the VCD now, just so i could watch it again. The Tomcat is still the sexiest plane ever built, IMHO. Haha.

I know the opening and closing parts were on the Enterprise, which is supposed to be playing her own role as the lead carrier in the movie. According to an 1991 issue of "Air Classics", many shots were also done on the Ranger and the Independence during their SLEP shakdown cruises. And the "Mirimar" shots were really done at "El Torro".

The Indy was the carrier filmed also in "Flight of the Intruder".

Scott,

While some interior shots were done on the USS Ranger, the exterior carrier shots as seen in the film, were of the USS Enterprise, CVN 65. The ball caps read "Enterprise" as well.

If your plan is to do a TOP GUN dio, you should do Enterprise, not Ranger.

I had heard that the end sequence when Mav tells Ice the he can be his wingman was on the Ranger. Now I'm going to have to go back and look and see if my friends on the Ranger lied to me.Big Smile [:D]( I served on board Ranger) Also two other appearances of the Ranger were in Star Trek IV ( When Chekov and Uhura go to the"Enterprise") and the end sequence of Flight of the Intruder was re-shot on the Ranger because the Indy was out to sea. That's our F-4 dud in the background of the scene. I put in a request chit to be a walk though extra that day, but was denied because I had duty that day and was on Rescue and Assistance. Sorry for rambling.....Blush [:I]
