In one of my other all-consuming hobbies, I am scratch-building a 1:29 railroad flat car for my garden railroad. It is a model of a steel car with a wood deck, so I'm using the same styrene base with basswood decking that you are. I've cut all of the decking but haven't applied it yet. In my case the decking on the prototype is originally painted the same "freight car red" as the rest of the car but rapidly gets chewed up as loads are nailed to it, scrape along the surface, etc., so it really needs a weathering job done on it. Thus, my plan is to try to apply stain (or a paint wash) first, then small areas of rubber cement, followed by airbrushing the color on, and finally removing the rubber cement to reveal the "raw" wood underneath. Having said all of that, I'm open to better alternatives.

rbleathers, looking forward to your "how-too" article. I have been wondering for sometime now how one could use wood for decking on a plastic kit.

Howdy All,

Thank you all for your comments. I'm gonna finish this model by making her a waterline. As for coloring the deck to more resemble the teak color- I'm working on that. I'm gonna use alot of scrap pieces to perfect it before I use it on this model. I'm putting together a how to article on applying wood to plastic and resin kits. It's really hard to answer questions about how I do it without forgetting to mention something. By writing it down I'll have something to contribute to all of you. I'm starting to put some more wood down on the forward superstructure this evening. I'll take some pic's and put them up. Thanx again for your support.

I agree with the others - looks great! What are you planning to do for finish on the deck when you're done? I assume that the actual ship had a teak deck, and thus a light grey stain might be appropriate, but I don't really know anything about this particular ship.

That is going to be one beautiful schiff. I love the way your decks look. I think I will try basswood on one of my later projects.

Looks pretty impressive. I like the decks and that scratchbuilding is nice and crisp. Great job so far. Keep us posted with more photos.

My Graf Spee build

Howdy All,

Here's a link to pic's of my Graf Spee build. I'm building the 1/400 Heller kit. I used Midwest .0208 X .0208 X 11" pieces of basswood for the decks. I'm scratchbuilding the entire superstructure. The kit pieces are more like the Admiral Scheer than the Spee.
