1/700 scale BB-39 USS Arizona paint question
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 27, 2005 2:04 PM
I am building a USS Arizona 1/700. The color chart calls for a red for the hull. I was wondering if anyone could be helpful on what kind/shade of red to use. I have a British Crimson but I feel that may be inaccurate. Thanks MartyM2828.

Marty,

The lower hull is an oxide red...it varies in shades but there's several colors in the Model RR world that come close, Tuscan Red, Boxcar red are a few.

Just remember that only the lower hull (below the waterline) is red. The upper half of the hull is 5-D Dark Gray up to the funnel tops, and 5-L Light Gray above that. The decks are natural teak.

Marty,
I'm currently building the 1/350 Arizona by Banner. There are several sites that sell the U.S. Navy Antifouling Red paint that the hulls of naval ships are painted with. Tamiya also has a hull red paint, but not really sure how acurate it is. I order mine from The Floating Drydock@www.floatingdrydock.com. The Ship Camouflage website@www.shipcamouflage.com, also carries this antifouling red paint. This paint is produced by White Ensign Models in the United Kingdom, and is also carried on their website. They come in 14ml tins, and sell for about $1.60. The websites carry the paints for U.S. ships, as well as paints for several other nations ships. Also the Ship Camouflage website is an excellent reference site for various camouflage and color schemes for naval ships. Hope this info helps you out.
