Carrier Deck Dimensions
Posted by Toother1321 on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 7:28 PM
I am in the process of putting together a diorama of a plane making an arrested landing. I was wondering if anybody had a picture straight down on the deck of a carrier that it would be possible to take dimensions off of. It has to be fairly close so i could get the measurements of the distance between the cables and all that. I want it to be very accurate

I took this while I was stationed on board the USS Midway. If I'm not mistaken, the wires are approx. 40ft. apart and here's a link to a spec page for the Midway. Hope this gets you started.Smile [:)]Drop me a line if you need anymore pix. I've got PLENTY.Big Smile [:D] Here's the exact moment of arrestment.

I'm doing a modern day carrier, for an f-14. Thanks for those pictures they are awesome. I'm a naval aviation freak. Just out of curiosity, what are those little circles scattered throughout the deck. I thought they were like drains on the flight deck and i had previously thought they were recessed but it doesnt appear to be in that photo. Also if you have any idea what the circumfrence of them are that would be awesome.

Those are called padeyes and they're roughly as big in dia. as a soft ball. That's what the tie down chains are connected to after they're hooked to the aircraft. They are cupped and the white stains you see is salt water that has been blown out by aircraft during recovery. Here are a couple of F-14 photos I took while stationed on CV-61. One is an arrestment and the other is a touch n go. Post some of your progress photos when you can. Cool [8D]

Hey Eddie, I am a Ranger-boat veteran too! I was stationed on her from !972 until 1975 when she was CVA-61. I was in Navigation Department. How about you?

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

Steve,

You'll find several straight down flight ops shots at www.news.navy.mil.

This is the Navy's Visual News Service site and they maintain a photo gallery of thousands of photos avaliable for free down load. Do a search on "Washington" and/or "Truman," and you'll find helpful photos.

Are you planning to show the Tomcat at hook engagement, after, or just before? There are lots of other photos that will help you too.

Enjoy,

Mike

Steve-
There is indeed 40 feet between the arresting wires (plus or minus a few inches). This is true for carriers back to Kitty Hawk (CV 63). Before that, there is less distance between arresting wires.

The USS Ronald Reagan has 3 arrestor cables not 4 like the other Nimitz class ships. They may more than 40 feet with just 3 cables.
