Bismarck
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 18, 2005 8:44 PM
hi all.
Well i've finally taken the plunge and am making my first 1/350 scale ship. (i usually make aircraft) Tamiya's bismarck. What a wonderful kit. I've only spent 3 days on it and it is really starting to take shape.
the reason i'm posting, is, does anyone know of a website that has a good range of pictures of the bismarck and general info on the ship? I'm kinda confused about colours and afew other things. If any of you have made the ship and have pics online, could you give me a link to it as this would help greatly.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Alan

thanks ddp59, those sites are really good. Last night i finished the hull. I've gone with the black and white stripes down the sides. Was having a bit of trouble with the red undersides, but have finally got the colour right and unmasked it this morning.
will keep you all posted.
Thanks again.

I'll have pics on my website in afew days hopefully,

Hey, it's great having you and our Aussie and Asian and European friends all together here. This is what people should be all about ... gettin' together and enjoying their common interests. Good on ya, FSM!

WW2boy: I to have searched for good references and have come up with some contradiction in way of paint schemes. I have looked at the websites described in an earlier post, different books, and the history channel series on battleships. The is no clear info on the paint schemes except those you see in the black and white photos. The big thing is, is the swastike red or gray. Was it painted over each time or was it on there for a limited time during shake downs. Even articles for survivor sailors contradict each other slightly. My self, I would like to pick two models of the Bismark and paint her according to the book by Dr. Ballard and paint the other in the website where it has the top of the turrents yelllow just to have a conversational piece. The Bismark was an awesome looking ship even though his existance was short lived due to a rushed completion. Just imagine if her AA guns were updated and working properly.

Snoopy, thanks for your comments, I'm kinda sure that the swastika was painted Gray, I was expecting it to be painted red, but i think that would look like a target during the war for aircraft, i'm not sure. I think that i'll go with Tamiyas instructions and keep it gray and white. I did some google image searches and some of the pics it brought up were painted so that all of the horizontal surfaces were painted in decking timber colour (on the super structure), which i was sure wasn't right. So i'm doing all of the super structure gray with some pastel weathering for depth.

Does anyone know any good tricks for getting the black and white stripes up the sides of the hull and superstructure straight? that looks like it could be a challenge.

MBT70, yep got the maori thing going on here. They are like any peole group, there are the ones that want to fit into society, and those that want to have everthing given to them for free... as it was their country first (150 years ago)... if you know what i mean. I kinda like them, most of them (less the extremeists) have a great personality and good sense of humour. Yep we are the first to see in the new millenium except for a small island somewhere. It's kinda cool, we do the new years thing, then watch on tv for the next 12 hours everyone else doing it... by the tme america comes around, its like so yesterday for us... Ha, kiddin
Thanks again.

On the National Geographic documentary , about the sunken Bismarck , they discovered that the Swastika , on the bow was still visible , colors unknown. Happy modelling !

One thought about the hull swastika - since it would be so easily identified from the air, one would think it would have been painted over when the ship went on its first war cruise. Propaganda is one thing, but making life easy for the enemy makes no sense. My guess is that the painted over swastika re-emerged after being submerged for so long.

Just a thought.
