A Rail-Car Ferry for Your Perusal
Posted by rockythegoat on Monday, August 1, 2005 12:29 PM
Here is my completed rail-car ferry for my HO scale layout. The kit is the "Jubilee" and is by Model Expo. It is 1/87 scale and is primarly of wood with brass, white metal, and nickel-silver details. It is large enough to hold (2) 40-50 foot cars.

While I don't normally build wood kits, I needed a break from all of the styrene glue fumes and this puppy was in the stash waiting to go. It went together well and was a fun kit. Recommend it highly. Enjoy the pics!

The last shot shows (2) 40-foot boxcars on the ferry.

Very nicely done. Is it going onto a layout?

Wish I had a completed Ferry... Sigh [sigh]

Wow!

That looks great! Was the ferry's draft really that shallow, or is this a waterline kit?

Regards,

Thanks for the kind words!

Umi: Yes, I will include this on my layout. Along with a couple of tugboats I have and some three foot long car floats. They will be used as staging areas for traffic coming on and off the layout.

Lufbery: The kit is a waterline model. My guess, and this is a guess only based on other rail-car ferrys, is that the draft on this ferry would be around 10 foot. BUT, that is a SWAG at best.

Rocky,
Post a pic of your harbor if you get a chance.
You don't by chance have an extra Walthers "car float apron" do you?
I have been on the hunt for one of those for my ferry.
They seem as rare as hens 'teeth"

Uni: I'll keep an eye for you. I called the guy in town here yesterday and all he had left was the pier crane and the dock warehouse.

Ok, I was keeping my eye on this, and by looking at the first bidders record, I knew this was going to get high. By the second day it jumped to $77 dollars.

Great job, and the view from the porch isn't bad either!

Big Smile [:D] Thanks! It's nice having Mr. Corn and Mrs. Soybeans as your only neighbors within a half-mile. (And no, I don't farm. If you ever saw me drive a tractor, you'd know why...)

Yea, the lighting is lots better out there on the porch, instead of at my dirty, unorganized workbench, with the flourescent lights.
