I'm with Dr on this one. If one's monetary situation is such that spending $30 or $40 for a better deck is not that siginificant a concern and one finds oneself bothered by the kit part, then it makes sense. On the other hand if one's finances do not allow for it or the kit part seems adequate, well it is another kit or two.

Speaking for myself, I have the Fujimi Saratoga, which has a really bad deck and will need some serious surgery, and although I get a PE set for the entire ship, I'll definitely not spend $30 for a PE deck.

Value is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I don't build 1/700 scale IJN carriers so I cant comment on the plastic kit decks, but I did see these new etched brass decks on display at his booth at Nationals. They were VERY nice. It boils down to how much extra detail you want to add.

i see that a company called midship models has a line of photo-etched carrier decks in the $30-40 usd range for skywave dragon hasagawa etc.
this decks cost more than the models we are talking models noted for high detail levels they seem to be Maybe not worth the brass the are made from
