i was thinking of making a partial fight deck in 1/144 scale
using some l.e.d. s for landing lights etc.
my question is do you think red/orange l.e.d. s
stuffed up the tails of the aircraft would look real enough for the hot engines
on take off

I think this might work, especially if you paint the inside of the engine area/cone a yellowish-organeish-reddish issue.

Or, paint the inside engine area flat black/old silver/metallic black, etc, and put a red/organge colored gel or translucent painted plastic disc between the LED and the exhaust end, to help diffuse the light.

i've done this a few times. i used a single clear red LED surrounded by 6 yellow LED's with pretty good results. I do think that this combined with the translucent plastic disc mentioned in the last post would give a good result.

P.S.- covering the inside of the cone with dull aluminum bare metal foil might work too but i have never tried it.
