Monitor & Virginia Vignette
Posted by gringe88 on Monday, August 15, 2005 4:21 PM
posted back here a while ago (im normally a treadhead) about these two ships and the color of their armor. Ive recently finished the vignette I was doing of them so I thought i would post it. Please critique it as you see fit. the smoke is just my own touch. its made with cotton fiber, but instead of painting or spraying on the color, i applied MMP powders, and dyed the cotton in a thinned sludge wash, followed by extensive drying with a hair dryer. the ships are thoroughbred models, hand painted, with PE details, and a few small scratchbuilt items. The flags are such, and were hand painted. the water is handpainted and replicated using clear tile caulk.

these next few pics are before i added the smoke-

please tell me what you think

As these two ship's were purt'near tanks themselves, I think they are a good subject for a treadhead. Great job!

Gringe, that is an excellent vignette! The smoke added to the scene really captures some of the fury of the battle. I can almost haer the cannons roaring.

Great job!

hey Subfixer didn't the Monitor and Merimack(Virginia) duke it out almost 200 yards from where the bridge and tunnel are located

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

they might have, although i think most of the battle took place at more like 400- 500 yards from fort wool (aka- the rip-raps, where the tunnel comes out/goes in)

The battle is said to have taken place up the river a little. Near the where the Monitor-Merrimac Tunnel is. Fort Wool is at the older Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. This is located where the estuary of Hampton Roads merges with the Chesapeake Bay. I think that these two tunnels are about two or three miles apart.

hey Subfixer do you remember the RC model of the Merrimac that was located near the housing development next to the bride on the Norfolk side of the channel

I don't remember an RC model but I do know of a small scale manned version someone had as well as a Monitor that used to duke it out sometimes.
