1/350 Scale Assault Ships ?
Posted by Helo H-34 on Friday, August 19, 2005 11:39 PM
For a change of pace from building 1/72 scale modern Jets and Helicopters ; I was thinking of trying my hand at a 1/350 U.S.Navy Assault Ship , such as an USS Tarawa,Saipan, Belleau Wood . However after visiting several hobby stores today around Sydney ,I could not find any of these ships in this scale .[plenty of 1/700 stuff]. I also had a bit of a browse on the Internet, to see what was on offer , but again not much luck there either. I know Trumpeter have released some very nice 1/350 Aircraft Carriers , but I was more interested in an Assault Ship with lots of Helicopters on deck .[this will complement my collection of 1/72 scale USMC Helicopters and Harrier's I have in my display cabinets]. So any advice and help would be much appreciated .

I don't think anyone makes an LHA/LHD in 1/350. There may be a 1/350 LPH resin kit but I think it was something around $500 USD. It would be a very nice complement to the 1/350 battleships, carriers, and destroyers.

Helo:

The company Iron Shipwright makes 2 assult ships in 1/350 scale. They are: USS New Port LST 1179 , USS Guam LPH-9. Both are resin and they come with photo etch.

My friend purchased the Guam at the US nationals this year, and I must say it is huge, and would make a beautiful display. I must tell you that these boys are not cheap.

Hi Dick
You're right about them not being 'cheap', but you also need to address the value for the money.

When you purchase a styrene kit you must then go out and purchase an aftermarket PE set. That is included in the purchase of most brands of resin ships.

When you purchase a styrene aircraft carrier, you must go out and purchase additional packs of aircraft. The airwing is provided with the Guam.

After you have purhased the accessory aircraft you may still need to purchase PE products to more accurately represent items such as rotors and propeller blades. That is included with the aircraft in the Guam kit.

After you purchase a styrene ship model you may still have to cobble together a set of hull numbers, stern name, and deck markings; or unique aircraft codes and markings. These are included in the purchase price of the Guam.

On most styrene carrier kits, if you desire to display an open hangar you need to scratchbuild one or purchase an aftermarket insert. The hangar deck is included as part of the kit.

Finally, when you find that a part is missing from the styrene kit,, break a part, or the cat knocks the completed model off the mantle two years after completing it, are you going to be able to get replacement parts. Iron Shipwright stands behind all their kits with a 100% satisfaction policy.

You're right. They're not cheap, but they are a good value for the money. And where will you find a 1:350 scale styrene LPH?

Ed:

I picked up 2 ships from you and Ted at the Nats this year. Over $250 in one shot, but well worth the price. It would take me forever to make a hull of the ACR Brooklyn, and she would never be produced in plastic.

I also have several YSM on my too build pile as well (these are more expensive than ISW and well worth it!!)

Thank's for all the advice everyone ; That USS Guam resin kit looks fantastic and I understand that the extra expence one would pay for such a kit is offset by the incredible amount of detail you get , but being on a limited budget , importing this type of kit to Australia is unfortunatly just to expensive . So as grandadjohn suggest's , here's hoping Trumpeter may bring one out in the near future . Kind Regards Helo 53
