USS Missouri question...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 29, 2005 2:06 PM
This might be a silly question, but looking for advice on how to paint this model. I have the Tamiya model, & am in the process of looking at the painting of it. I would like to paint it simular to the 1944 scheme( measure 32/22D), but not sure how to best tackle it. If I choose this way what is the best way to paint it? Should I prime everything, build it as a mock up ( ie with tape or whatever) paint it, tear it apart, then glue & touch up as needed. Or should I just paint the pieces as best I can while I build it. Just looking for advice.

One other question to go along with this, If I choose the Measur 22 way, it shows that the decks are a Deck Blue, but in several pictures that I have seen it seems that some of the deck is wood, what is the most correct representation. Any help would be appreciated (sp?)

This is a quandry that most ship modelers face...and everyone does things differently.

I mock up each section of the superstructure and mask it, then paint it. I'll assemble the major components then add the smaller parts, painted in whatever color is dictated by the background color. I typically use lots of masking tape, but lately I've gone to Glad Press N' Seal. I have no problems with it if it's applied over clean, primed plastic.

As for Measure 22, even the wood received color. Although the wood tended to wear more quickly than the metal, it should all be 20-B when viewed from above.

Thanks for the help.... two more quick questions, 1 ) I believe the Anchor chanis were black, if my local hobby store only sells them in brass, can they be painted & what size should I get for a 1/350 scale model. The other question is Brass drive shafts for the propellers, What is the apprioate size for the same scale model?

Thanks

Brass takes paint well usually. Tamiya primer for metal solves most problems.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Go to the model railroad section and look for Blacken-It.

Look for Tiger Model Designs chain for the armor modelers,

This is their Very Fine chain which I use for destroyer-sized projects in 1:350 and battleships/carriers/cruisers in 1:700 scale. They also sell a Fine chain which would be more appopriate for a 1:350 scale Missouri
