RNLI scale kits
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 9:37 PM
Anyone know of any RNLI scale kits? I'm sure there must be some, I did do a search but only came up with pre-made display models

Hi Vapochilled,
There are several kits of RNLI boats available. Some may be a bit difficult to find at the moment though.
Frog, Glencoe and Billings are three manufacturers that come to mind.
The Billings kit is of a USCG boat but the same design is used by the RNLI.
If you go to the RNLI web site you will find out all you need. Also the British model boat mags have lists of the boats.

I saw the Billings one, was looking more towards the modern boats though, I've just seen Airfix do one, but it's quite small.

I have in my half done pile, a white metal kit that is about 15 years old, unknown manufacturer, of an ARUN class boat. Bought it from the RNLI when I was stationed in the UK during my previous life in the USAF.

I think the scale is around 1/72-ish. It's a real rough kit, the castings need a lot of clean up and are misshapen more often than not. The stern on mine was cracked and needed a whole bunch of clean up and putty. I'm making mine into a US fireboat and normally work on it about once a year for a couple of hours, get frustrated, then put it away for awhile. Should be done by 2020!Big Smile [:D]

Here's a pic of a real one.

I'll need to keep an eye on the airfix site I guess, thanks for the heads up Michael

And White Ensign Models will be releasing a dedicated photoetch set for the Airfix kit. We plan to donate part of the proceeds from the sale of these sets to the RNLI (which, for all of you non-UK residents out there, is a completely volunteer force which relies on public donations for its funding).

Cheers,

Yep, we're UK-based. We post worldwide, so the States (or anywhere else) is no problem. Our own products ship post-free worldwide (except our paints, which ship at-cost by weight).

And as for the paints, we'll be doing our own paint matching when we go down to measure the boat for the photoetch, and will be adding accurate RNLI colours to our Colourcoats range.

Cheers,
John Snyder

I have a friend who makes regular trips to the UK and she said that she will bring one back with her before Christmas.
Can anyone tell me the name and number of the Newhaven Boat?
I was born there in 19XX.

Yes the PE set would be much different, the Model slipways kit is 1/16 scale. Big Smile [:D]

They do sell a slightly smaller kit though...

http://www.speedlinemodels.co.uk/index.html however are 1/12 scale, and it shows all the parts that come with their Trent Class RNLI. I would imagine that the Severen class model would have the same amount of detailing available in it's kit.

Thanks to all who have helped re the Newhaven Boat.
Now all i have to do is get the kit and then workout how to motorise and r/c it.
I have already modified an s-boot and a Clyde Puffer, both to 1/72, and they both go well.
Several members of the St George have motorised even smaller plastic kits and they work verry well.
