Trumpeter Seawolf
Posted by styrene on Friday, September 2, 2005 10:43 PM
I bought the new 1/144 Trumpeter Seawolf at the Nationals in Atlanta and have now started it. What a nightmare! The fit is pretty bad, and I have puttied, sanded, sanded, puttied and sanded some more. Did I mentioned I had to putty and sand a lot? For a 45-piece kit that I thought would be a relatively quick build, and an easy distraction from my more "involved" projects, this thing's a LOAD--and I only have the basic hull together. I just finished gluing on the sonar dome--blecccchhhh!

Anybody else build this thing? Anything else I should know before I call DuPont and order a dump truck full of lacquer putty, and deplete Home Depot of their entire stock of sandpaper?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Maybe I'm just stupid and doing it all wrong, but I would strongly caution anyone looking to buy this kit to first check their health insurance policies to see if they cover visits to psychiatrists and/or psychologists.

OK, the voices in my head are telling me I have to stop now and go back to the sonar dome. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!

I threw away my Trumpeter 1/700 Arizona when the Dragon kit came out. Approve [^] My take on it: wait for Dragon to make the kit.Wink [;)]

Chasing the ultimate build.

I guess I'm just from the generation that can't bear to throw ANYTHING away, no matter how awful. I try, not always successfully, to regard the bumps in the road as part of the modeling process. The challenge, for lack of a better word. Big Smile [:D]

I have made a few posts before about this kit. It is all wrong.. I gave mine away to my nephew to build as a "pool toy". Dragon is doing a 1/350 kit soon, knowing Dragon it should be good.

Styrene, Cybermodeler has a online build for the Trumpeter SeaWolf by Michael Benolkin. He pretty much says the hull is trash. You should check it out.

one of the guys i work with served on the seawolf for a couple years and decided he wanted to build the kit. He said the same thing and that the hull shape was all wrong anyway. He too is waiting for the Dragon kit to come out

The Decals are supposed to be wrong too. I think that was in the FSM kit review.
