Comments on the Italeri 1/720 CVN-75 Truman?

Recently picked one up for not a lot of coin. Thoughts on the accuracy or lack thereof of this kit (the planes don't look the best, will be using Skywave's) and any build problems/things to watch out for.

Thanks in advance!

Rocky,

I just finished one converted to the George Washington CVN 73. Using some good photos and a little scratch building, along with the Gold Medal Models Supercarrier PE set, the kit can be buit into a nice model.

You are right about the kit aircraft. Skywave's are good, but I also used some Fujimi planes too.

Please check the US Navy Newstand site, www.news.navy.mil. They have lots of Truman photos in their photo gallery that will show what needs to be done for the island and radar tower. The GMM PE set solves some of this for you. Plus the kit's flight deck markings were fine for the Nimitz in 1975, but they are not correct for today. You can still use most of the decals, but study photos for what shouldn't be there. Many folks paint the stripes on since the yellow color is a bit orange on most printings. The deck numbers are a joke. I had to come up with some from a spares box.

A little pre planning and the Navy photo downloads should get you there.

Enjoy.

Trumpeter is going to be issueing true 1/700 kits of modern aircraft carriers. Expected subjects: USN Nimitz class CVNs, Modern Russian Admiral Kunestov, French Charles De Gaulle.

Kunestov is already showing up as is the Nimitz.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Thanks for the tips.

Decisions, decisions. Build the Italeri, wait for Trumpeter.....sigh....

Ooops, looking at this the wrong way! Another reason (as if one was needed) to buy another kit!

Rocky,

If the smaller scale Trump Nimitz is like the 350 one, you'll still be stuck with much of the same problem. It is a model of the Nimitz as it appeared in 1975, at least that's what the current 350th one is.

I understand they're releasing other ships, and I hope they'll include the necessary changes, in the sponsons, island, radar tower, etc.

Enjoy the build.
