Anyone ever ordered from the W.E.M. site?
I tried to put in an order but ran into endless problems regards java scripts. No amount of work by me to degrade the security setting on my computer would allow the transaction to go forward! I gave up and went to bed after hours of trying. Anyone else not getting through?
All up I was after 5 sets (4 set for the Bismarck and 1 for Yamato) and wanted to go direct (how old is the sit anyhow? Looked like Windows 95, ran like Windows 98 (1st edition), grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I would hate to order it and just get the railings when it shows guns, portholes, doors, guns...... Plus, with the way i am going, i may need two sets anyways. This is my first big ship in about 10ys, i did the NJ when i was 16 and my skills have gone way up in the last 1-2 years. Its my first full out PE kit on a ship, but so far, alls going well.

great postings!

Hi PC,
Yep the pic is part of a set on the Eduard site. I'd have to say that I do think it looks more slanted at the Tirpitz (well it IS the Tirpitz set Blush [:I]) but you could get a lot of use out of it with a set or two Cool [8D].

I noticed this set for the Tirpitz that has some useful looking PE for either ship. I know that some is Tirpitz specific and so on but you’d get a ship somewhere between the TMW set and the 3 WEM sets for not too much money.

Crayfish, I have done a bunch of washes and beginning to really get in to drybrushing. yes i do have an airbrush and have a couple dummy aircraft that i am working on setting up some other techniques i have found in modeling books.

I have not however see the pre-shading technique, GREAT video, i love videos of techniques, they say it so much better than a few paragraphs. If you know of any other video links, send em. Thanks. I will have to give that a try on one of my dummy planes.

Not a bad idea on the fish tank. I have a 125gallon tank, think we can build a ship to fit in it. :)

I was actually thinking of trying to find plans for a big book shelf type thing, put small lights in it and have glass doors of some sort. That would be nice. I did make one out of lexan in college for a humvee i did for my dad, it came out pretty well. but the big ships are difficult.

Great info Crayfish. Thanks for passing it along.

Paintchip,
I was going to go down to my local pet shop and have an aquarium made (and flip it upside-down) to fit a yet to be obtained base (drop in on any kitchen cabinet builder to get him to rout you a nice base up) that will be made to fit the ship.
Are you up to speed on pre/post shading? If not and you are using a airgun to paint then for……….

Pre-shading I’d go here (just for a basic idea).

Post-shading go here (modify so that it works for you).

For “washes” you would do no better than adapting MIG’s technique (he was a revolutionary in his time but almost everybody is doing it his way now!) to ships.

This group of boys are a great help and if you take your time looking at the work they do you'll get some good ideas on techniques (god knows I’ve got a ton of good ideas of them over the years)

I can be more specific if you let me know exactly what it is you need.

Any information you have, i would be interested in reading it. I am new to the weathering side of modeling and the more information the better.

Your glass case you speak of, is this something you have made or purchased. The bismarck is my second big ship after the Missouri, i have the yamoto, ticonderoga class ship, and yorktown next with my eye on the nimitz and possibly the hood. I need somewhere nice to store them, the shelves only work for so long. If its something you made, are there plans out there on the internet to make one?

Have fun with the bismarck, the tamiya kit is nice, no problems so far. but i am only about a 1/4 -1/3 of the way there.

Thank you both for replying to my post Smile [:)].

That WEM set(s) looks to have most of it coved so I think I’ll have a shot at that. However, if I was on a budget the Tom’s set would certainly give the ship a touch of detailing it sorely needs (no deck rails even Tamiya!). The build by Mike looks very comprehensive and is a target I’d shoot at, detailing wise, and I’ve always like the idea of a warship in a glass case on display in the house. My wife thinks that tanks look too “trashy” all caked in simulated mud and chipped paint so I never get to display them. Now a pristine ship, in high detail, should allay her ridicule and I’ll have something I can point to that shows her friends that I don’t “play with toys in my hobby room” as she’s stated once or twice. Plus the hobby room is just a money pit to her as she’s got no interest in it other than costs. Milling machine, multiple small drills and no end of tools like PE folding tools to aid the “hobbyist” in his relentless quest for modeling perfection!

The thread (link is http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=51605) you started pc will come in very handy. Most of the techniques came from the aviator section hobbyists and are now stock in AFV land as well. There are a raft of painting and weathering techniques at sites dealing with those two arms of the hobby that may be worth a look to you. I wonder how the current dry powders being use on AFVs would work on warships, mmmmmmmm.

I am building the same ship, purchased the photo etch kit from Toms Modelworks. Just started putting on the radio antennas and detailing the control tower, makes a HUGE difference, really looks sharp. I think toms modelworks has it for about 17-20. Did not purchase the portholes and doors yet, but might.

There is also a good weathering topic that i started "deck and superstructure weathering" I think she is on page 2 or 3 now. You might be interested in that too.

I have the PE set from Tom's Model work, #3512, cheap ($19) and good enough for me.

The White Ensign Models has two comprehensive sets if you need the extreme details. A lot of work and a lot of money.

You can find more information from Michael Taylor's review:
