I'm getting two GMM sets 350-27 and 350-28. I've read two reviews and I could see somone charging double the price somewhere else. The frets are HUGE, and the instructions look awesome. Each part is made to exactly fit the place on the model individually, so no cutting is required on mass-production parts. These two sets each cost about $40 and will be going on my trumpeter 1/350 Nimitz to replace saftey nets as well as another thousand things like interiors of aircraft, radars, bikes, and lots of other things. can't wait to get it, along with my etch-mate.

Maybe I just lucked out on the only Tom's Model Works PE fret I've been exposed to to date, the basic merchant ship set. I thought the directions were OK, on a par with the resin ship kits I've built so far, but I didn't really use them since I was putting bits from the Liberty ship fret onto my 1/700 Victory ship.

My only complaint was that not all the parts were labelled. Some things were intuitive, like the different sizes of anchor chain, but other things ... well, it was a few days before it dawned on me that those long smooth oval thingies were watertight doors.   Big Smile [:D]

I, hear you guys. I am far from a PE expert and if the directions are not real clear I will probably screw it all up. As always thanks to all of you guys for your help, it is very useful. LEB68 .Lonnie.

Tom's makes decent enough basic PE but the instructions leave quite a bit to be desired. For me it's a toss up between GMM and WEM and it really depends on the subject. WEM's one drawback is the occassional extremely fiddly assembly on very fine parts (note an experienced PE user won't have a problem but a newbie probably will).

I always look at the Gold Medal Models set and the White Ensign Models set for the kit I'm building and decide which has more of what I want.  On some kits they have enough different items that I'll buy both sets!  GMM and WEM are the only ones I really look at, I've never been disappointed by their quality or content.  If they don't have what I want, then I'll look at other suppliers.

I agree that Tom's Model Works is probably your best bet for basic PE sets - decent detail, fairly good variety, and not insanely expensive. Good learning tools.

Gold Medal Models sets generally do have a lot more things for each ship, and much better detail (embossed hatches and hose reels for instance) but the trade offs are two - higher cost, and much, much higher frustration level for things like radar antennas and other delicate parts.

What you SHOULD do is compare. Most websites have photos of their PE frets that you can look at and compare to see which one has the most of what you want. I have mixed and matched on both of my ship models to date, and I imagine other modelers do the same.

Tom's is a great way to start off on PE and is generally less expensive than Gold Medal Models. That said, the GMM sets are usually larger, more detailed and (in my opinion) better. White Ensign Models also makes highly detailed (and rather expensive) PE sets as well. I've used all three and my favorite is GMM.

Smile [:)]Smile [:)] Hello, I would like to ask all of you wich PE co. has the best PE set, or has the better detailed, or complete PE set to offer us for 1/350 scale ships like battleships? I am about to start construction on either the Tamiya Bismark, or the Tripitz, or both the Yamato, Musash, Prince of Wales, King George V, etc. These are just some of the models that I have to build and I would like the best or close to the best PE sets that is not going to break the bank so to speak . I have been looking at buying Toms Models works, but I have noticed the Gold Medal Models have been around doing this PE thing longer than any one that I can tell. Since the 80's it seems. I guess what I am asking does one have more PE parts than the other that will give your model a more complete look, or a more real look ? As always I really look forward to all of your comments and want to thank all of you for your help. leb68.
