Pamir: OOPS

Yes it is me again,

From the subject you can parhaps guess I have made a few mistakes.

I thought I knew about models. Well, I do with cars and motocycles. But this ship building is another story completely.

I have made a few mistakes. (No laughing) I hope you can help me out. Starting this project has been a meditation exercise. I really want to get "going" on it, But am holding myself back so that I do it right. So now that I am this far (Explained in a second) I am not happy and would like to know what my options are.

1. The Hull: Well, my cute little 5 year old thought she would help me by scaping the hull on the tile floor. OUCH! scratch marks. I have sanded and thought it was good enough, but after the first coat of laquer (Hull Red) I can really see the reminents of my flawed sanding. P.S. I have to use spray cans as I don't have an airbrush. So, what can I do to fix this little problem?

2. The deck: For the rest of the model, I decided to go with acrylic brushing. So I have my light brown paint and paint the deck. Way to dark. I get a bottle of Deck Tan. This turned out to be grey. Also, due to my superb painting ability, I have some areas that are not covered so well and others that are well covered if you know what I mean. I am hesitant to sand as I will take off the wood grain tecture. My questions are: 1. Anyway to thin or take of the paint? 2. What color should I use? Note: I am using Tamiya paints.

3. Other pieces: As I found out with the deck, and now with painting other pieces, the acrylic dries very quickly and it does not go on well. I went back to my LHS and way in the back of the shelf was a bottle of acrylic thinner. Just got to love Taiwan Hobby Shops. Anyway, Some of the pieces look awful. Brush strokes, etc. As with the deck, anyway to take this off or smooth it out? What am I doing wrong when I am painting?

I can guess some answers: Sand baby sand. But perhaps there are other options. Future. Windex.

Boy, I hope to get some great feedback on this.

I am desperate.Sad [:(]

For the record: I am in Taiwan. Obtaining some things is difficult. Example. the LHS has only 3 sizes of brushes. No sandpaper or exacto knives. Understand that this lack of professionalism is very common in Taiwan.

Thanks all for your future help,

Robert

Stop - back up and try again.
Spray on oven cleaner will remove most hobby paints without damaging the plastic.

In the States a common brand is Easy-Off, but store brands work just as well. The material is a caustic spray which eats baked-on food in an oven. Use eye and skin protection when using.

Put the model in a large bin, spray the oven cleaner over the model and allow to sit for several hours to overnight. Brush with an old toothbrush. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Works well on acrylic paints..

Once the paint is removed from the hull fill and sand scratches then repaint. Adequately thin the bottle paint for brushing to minimize brush strokes. By mixing well you will also help guarantee a consistent color.

If you have trouble finding American-style oven cleaner, try automotive brake fluid. The stuff that's sold over here for that purpose is an excellent paint remover for plastic. It probably would be best to test it on a piece of sprue or other scrap, just to be safe, but I've gotten excellent results with it for years.

I'm not really familiar with Tamiya paints, but they have a good reputation. If their "Deck Tan" looks grey, it probably is pretty accurate. If you check out color photos of wood decks you'll see that the color has remarkably little brown or tan in it.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.
