Pamir: Detail painting
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 21, 2005 12:09 PM

Hello all again,

Another silly question. But before I ask, just a word of thanks. All of you have been a great help. I am eternally grateful for the great hint of using oven cleaner for taking off paint. I m getting better at using that than painting my model.

Anyway, My decks are finished and I am painting (all brush) the major parts of the deck. (Map room, steering room, etc). at this scale 1:150 the doors and windows are very tiny, but I would like to bring these out as it were. how would you go about painting the door frames when the walls are white as well as the doors?

I know, simple. But I can't figure it out.

Don't worry, I ahve ordered my books from Amazon (Underhill, Villier, and other books on rigging ans scale ship modeling). I just thought since they will take time to arrive here in Taiwan that I would ask you all.

Happy modeling,

Robert

Here's an age-old trick passed down from the figure painters – lining...

When you want to show contrast or a demarcation line between similar colors, use a fine line of a dark color, burnt umber, dark gray, or even black (but not on white) to create an artificial shadow line. It will accentuate the door from the frame and the frame from the wall.

Jeff,

Thank you.

This is exatly what I am talkig about. Because the wall and door are at such a samll scale, my concerning actually cutting the line. Am I just looking for a quick and easy way to do something which is actually very difficult?

I think I have 2 choices, but perhaps there are other ways.

1. Maske around the door and then paint. of course, this is not easy to due to the size.

2. Use a pencil as you mentioned I should do with the decking. (By the way, it worked) I have now only painted the decks 4 times. When I go for the wash, it just turns into blah. so oven cleaner and restart. I would love to try to drybrush. I read that "washing" is easy while drybrushing is more difficult. From my experience if it takes me 4 tries to "wash the deck drybrushing would take oh..... anywhere from 20 to 30 tries.

But man is this fun. Yes, I picked a difficult model, but I am glad I did. When I get finished, I will feel great.

It would never pass any IPMS scrutiny, but that is not why I am doing this hobby.

Thanks,

Robert

To Jeff and others,

I want to apologies for all of the typos. I am stuck using a notebook and my stubby fingers find this a bit of getting use to.

Sorry to all,

Robert
