According to Guadalcanal by Richard B. Frank, the Zuikaku had a "authorized" strength of 27 Zeroes, 27 Vals and 18 Kates. However, only 20, 23 and 20, respectively, were considered operational.

Frank states that for the first wave that launched at 0725, Zuikaku contributed 21 Vals and an unknown number of Zeroes (total 21 from all three carriers in Carrier Division One).

For the second wave launched at 0840, Zuikaku launched 16 Kates and 4 Zeroes,  plus 1 additional Kate as a contact keeper for the formations.

Seems like a simple enough question.

But after looking into it, no idea.

Good luck on that one.

Zuikaku Air Group - Battle of Santa Cruz.

Hope someone here could help me with this issue. I am modeling the Fujimi 1/700 Zuikaku, showing it during the Battle of Santa Cruz. I am trying to duplicate the ship during the launching of the first aircraft wave, the one that heavily damaged the USN Hornet. After searching some books and the web, found conflicting information for such first wave - some says 21 Vals dive bombers and others 18 Kate torpedo planes. Will appreciate if someone could help me making clear this issue. Best regards, Paulo Roberto
