anyone know what the difference is between the production version and the newer kit?

If you mean the special kit for the 100th anniversary of Tsushima, I think it includes a figurine of Admiral Togo and other extras and the standard kit will not include these.  I could be wrong........

Or do you mean the "Battle of Yellow Sea" version. it contains extra parts for the "fighting top", with 4.7cm guns for two masts.
