Sail models that cannot be ignored
Posted by MagicSteve on Saturday, December 24, 2005 1:51 PM

I recently picked up a copy of the Shipyard 1/96 HMS Bellona (74).  It is a cardstock model that comes in the form of a A3 sized booklet with parts printed on light card stock.  The instructions are impressive, but in Polish, but the illustrations are excellent.  This is the kind of kit that requires tons of additional card stock and other materials, and will require much to be scratch built using wire and other materials.  There is also a mast set that will help considerably.  Aftermarket parts will definitly be useful.  Check out what a master can do with this kit http://www.old.modelarstwo.org.pl/szkutnicze/zestaw/shipyard/bellona/index.html

There is also a build of HMS Victory using the Shipyard kit for it.  It is very impressive see http://www.kartonmodellbau-elite-club.de/wbb2/thread.php?threadid=85&sid=30c519a27b62c5f93701d74da5266fa3  While neither of these kits is suitable as a first cardstock model, the possibilites with this medium cannot be ignored.

I have never built a card stock model so I will try my luck with lots of simpler stuff first, but if anyone has any real experience in the medium I would love to read about it.

For what it is worth, there is a gentleman in germany doing a great job on the 1/96 victory and seems to be on pace for completing it in about 6 months.  This gentleman is working very quickly and possesses considerable skill in doing this project.  Apart from painting, the work involved seems to be considerably more involved than a plastic kit.  if one does everything OOB them my guess is that it will take at least twice as long to do the hull.  Given the size of some of these kits, a hobby builder should not plan to exhibit a model of the Bellona for two to three years.  By comparison, the given recommendation for the Heller Victory is about 2 years to complete as a hobby project, Revell big Constitution about a year.

The problem with the paper kits is that they do require a somewhat different skill set.  Based on what I have seen, even the smallest of the Shipyard kits is maybe too much for a first time card modeler.  The Bellona or Victory would be way too much to start with.

My plans are to start with some simple free download kits, I have a couple of air ships.  Learn a bit about the medium.  Try the smallest rigged ship I can find, small and simple, not small tiny intricate difficult.  At this point I should know if I am up to the challenge of Bellona.
