Quite right!   When the Hasegawa gun was the only game in town it was acceptable.   When WEM offered a replacement, the game changed.

The gun shield is better shaped - wider not tall like the Hasegawa

The gun is correctly shaped

The PE details such as the grabs and gunner recoil protector are provided.   These must be scratchbuilt or faked using the Hasegawa.

The white metal trail arms are the correct shape and do not have a god-awful injector pin in the middle of them.

The WEM offering is the clear choice.

Hasagawa did a 37MM gun in their 1/72 jeep kit. It's the same style that was used on the 109.

I do think that kit is still avalible

The gun is pretty good and with a little spiffing up it's quite acceptable.

That's a good point Ed. As you know, I'm considering building up the interior on my 1/72 Revell including adding engines. Granted, alot of work on a small scale ...

Thanks for the heads up on this EdGrune. Isn't the HO scale a bit smaller than the 1/72?  I'll keep this in mind as I think we have a RR Hobby shop here in town.

I've been eye-ballin' these for my PT Boat interior. The ladders, co2 cylinders, extinguishers, etc. Man.... mmmmmy my what a selection of "goodies!!

Resist the temptation.   If you need some of these items go to the model railroad side of the hobby shop and look at their HO details.   Detail Associates makes some very good styrene & resin parts which will fill the bill.  There are also some lost wax brass castings on the market.    Gold Medal Models makes some very nice photoetched lader stock in railroad scales.

There are a couple of raps against HR.

A) Most of the products in the HR list are topside details and are applicable for desrtoyer-sized and larger ships.  Most were too big/too heavy for PT boats

B) Delivery of HR products is vey slow, even when ordering directly from them.   They'll fill your order when they get around to it.

C)  The molds are tired.   When the parts are finally delivered they suffer from severe mold seams and are lopsided.   Some are short-shot and unusable.  By the time you clean them up you are left with a pile of metal filings and a part whish is several sizes too small.  Be prepared to add pieces of styrene or putty onto the part to make them useable - almost like scratchbuilding.  If you do order from them, order several more of each item than you need to cover the useability issue.

pittsfieldpete, I just ordered the WEM photo-etch detail set for the  PT-109 along with the 37mm gun form    whiteensignmodels.com  along with the US-29 "Tropical Green"  &  the US-14 Copperoid for the bottom of the hull. Cost me like $57.00 directly from White Ensign Models.  The detail sets are well worth it on the kit [from what I've learned] I'm waiting on them to arrive next week.

The gun lashed to the deck of the 109 was an Army field piece with the wheels removed.  If you check back with White Ensign you will find that they also have a mixed media kit of this gun.

What a bonehead I am! It's not a 72mm gun, and if I'd only looked deeper in this forum I'd have found my own answer!

PT 109 Deck Gun, etc.
Posted by pittsfieldpete on Tuesday, December 27, 2005 12:06 PM

Hey:

I'm planning to build PT-109 using Revell's kit & White Ensign detail set. I'd like to build as accurately as possible, but I can't find any good, useful photos or drawings of the 72mm gun mounted on the bow. I know it's supposed to be the same gun used in the Bell Airacobra, but that's all. Are plans out there somewhere? How about a plastic, resin or white metal "kit" of the gun as used on the PT boats?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
