Modern U.S.N. Colors
Posted by f_baquiran on Monday, January 2, 2006 12:42 AM

I have an unbuilt 1:350  U.S.S. Mobile Bay (Ticonderoga) kit by Mini-Hobby Miniatures.  I bought the kit just to see the quality of their kits.  Looks like a reboxed Dragon Kit built for motorization.  My problem is the instructions are in chinese and, althought I can build the model based on the pictures alone, I don't know the correct colors to use for the waterline, hull, superstructures and deck.  Can anyone help me?  Preferrably in Tamiya acrylic/enamel or Gunze Sangyo colors because these are the paints readily available.

Thanks guys!

The spec for modern US Navy Haze Gray is 26270 - I use MM Neutral Gray.

I forget the spec for the decks, but I use MM Gunship Gray for them.

New flightdeck non-skid is darker than Gunship.   For that I use MM Engine Gray and drybrush it or lightly dust a coat of Gunship.

My favorite hull red is Rusty Red Primer from the American Traditions line of spray paint from Lowes.  Another good colors are PollyScale Red Zinc Chromate - check the model railroad side of the hobby shop.

I'll leave it to you to make conversions to Gunze or Tamiya.  Don't sucumb to temptation & use Tamiya hull red as an easy out.  It is appropriate for the IJN during WWII, but is too brown for most other navies.

The most accurate out ofthe bottle solution to your paint concerns is the Colourcoat line of paints from White Ensign, but they are enamels.

Thanks Ed!

Will look at Urban Fredriksson's Color Reference Charts for the conversion.

Anyway am not really going for 100% accuracy on this kit.  Like I said i just wanted to see the quality of Mini Hobby Model's Kits.  They're relatively cheap compared to other brand.

Thanks again!
