I've given up trying to sand PE parts, because I decided my collection of crumpled up bits of brass and stainless steel was large enough!

What works for me is a dark-colored plastic cutting board and oblique light, which gives a nice contrast with the PE fret. Usually I can make a clean cut with a fresh No. 11 blade, but if not, then I switch to the No. 12 blade and rock it gently back and forth along the edge to get the remainder off. The key for me has been the firm, high-contrast background cutting surface, which allows me to get more of the cuts right the first time.

If the fret is laid out so I can cut the part free and leave a large stub I do that then come back with a #17 blade and "guillotine" cut the stub off. If I need to smooth it still more I hold the part in flat tipped tweezers right up against the offending bit and sand lightly along the length with a tan Squadron sanding stick.

Another option is to lay the rail on a piece of glass, then, with a No. 12 or other curved blade, gently rock the blade along the edge of the rail until you trim off the nub.

I've given up trying to sand them off, between my big fingers and bad eyesight, I usually mess up the rails too.

I use a very fine fingernail polishing board (from Sally Beauty Supply) and apply very light pressure, almost just letting the weight of the board be enough,   No need to bear down.  Sand along the length of the railing as opposed to across the railing

.. thinnest of railings?

Im talking about those little stubs left from where you cut it off the fret.
I tried to sand one down a smidgeon with some 800 grit, but the railing  went and bent on me and now its all  out of kilter!
