Newbie wants to buy this model/Your opinions

  In comparison, the tamiya kit is better than the minihobby kit...but by a small margin, and the price is well...somewhat inflated.

  I've read negative reviews of the PT-815, but I found all three examples that were sent to me to be fine kits, easily convertable from the r/c model to a static kit, and said so in my review of them. Especially for the price, it is a fun build, requiring just a little modification.

   In posting on different forums I have heard reviews of the MHM kit all the way from "just like the tamiya kit" to "utter crap". Some of them actually have built an MHM kit, and some of them have not, and rate it simply because its not "name brand." I know how use hobby people can get, our way is the right way and everything else is a step below...... However, I have also head people say that the tamiya kit is not all the great either (detail that is not really defined), and the MHM is a great buy. Ive come to the conclusion that the MHM kit will be a good investment, and with a lot of knowledge already in hand I sure I will be able to produce a stellar model.

 

Im looking at building her over a course of 4 months. Ill post some pics while she is in drydock!

MiniHobby Models is supposed to be a sister company of Trumpeter I think.  I've bought their Torpedo Boat (PT-815) and seen the quality of their other offerings like the King George V.  First of all they were built for motorization even if it says "static model" in the box and their hulls are modified to take the propeller shaft.  Second, the parts have a lot of flash and the molds not that crisp.  If you want to build a great model then buy the Tamiya kit.  If you want an inexpensive ship model to try out first then get the MiniHobby Models Kit.

   Just remember to take it easy with the aircraft...there are a ton of details (literally, a ton)...but you will end up with a stunning ship!

Good because Im getting the tamiya kit......I figured it has to be bad for so many people to hate it.

Take this from a modeler who has built the MiniHobby Arizona and the Bismark..............STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!! Spend the few extra bucks and get the Tamiya kit.

The quality of the MiniHobby kits are poor in regards to fit and the type of plastic.  The instructions have errors as well.

  The Tamiya kit is certainly better in accuracy and quality...but be prepared to spend quite a lot of time building it...especially the air arm (redundant beyond belief).  If this is your first ship kit, I would go with the chinese offering...yeah, it is more simplistic, but the overall effect is good, and if you are going to display it next to your Enterprise starship, would fit in well.

I agree with Smokingun, Alot of small parts to fit,trim,detail, this would have to be a big commitment in time and patience on your part to do it well. If you can try to see a kit box opened to get a idea of whats involved.You might want to do something less intense to start,remember dont set a time limit when building, it take a lot of the fun out of it. Good luck on your next project.

For a first time thats a little extreme but in my opinion id go with the Tamiya kit a little more money but less headaches but thats my opinion some body else my have some more info for you but thats one big kit.
