It's a very good article by Rusty White on doing water dioramas. I'm doing my first water diorama using the techniques in the article, and it is coming out real nice. Although, I substuted Milliput putty in place of the Sculpy for the bow wakes. I'm also using Liquidex modeling paste for the swells. Liquidex gloss gel medium goes over that, and is of course used for the water.
The article will explain all in detail.

thanks for you two. i think this will get me started.

There a some stuff for model rr that makes good water. i have used it many times and now i can't remember the name. Basiclly you just prep the area add this stuff and heat it and it melts. Another thing is to use hot glue sticks just besure you use a old pan/pot.

Haven't used it myself, but saw an obscure reference in an article somewhere that the stuff at http://www.woodlandscenics.com/ might work. Looks like they have a few solutions available - look under the "Landscaping" tab, then "Water". This may be what 1stsgt was referring to, and I've seen displays in my local shop and in a rr store.

I think the acrylic gel solution is most widely accepted but it likely depends on your particular need. Definitely test the methods out before applying to your model!

I remember reading an article on a 1/700 scale Bismarck over at steelnavy.com. The builder describes how to make water using a small glass photo frame with foil for texture. The results were specactular.
