Kitbashing a phantom ship
Posted by Gerarddm on Thursday, February 23, 2006 8:33 PM
Been looking to build a good looking battleship and found Web images of Yamato imagined as a starship, very creative. The thought occurred to me that, if I wan't concerned with historical accuracy, I could take a Yamato or Iowa or Richelieu kit and kitbash it, loading it up with extra guns, superstructure, etc. Sort of an idealized fantasy version of the essence of a sea-going battleship. Phantom cars are done all the time... anybody ever do a phantom ship?

Yes, I have, only I called it my "What If?" Kit. I had had an old Airfix Tirptz hull sitting around with most of the small guns, antenna and several other small parts missing from it. Then I noticed that I still had all four complete main gun turrets in my spares box. Since I already had a Tirptz and a Bismarck already built I wasn't sure what t do with this old model. Then it hit me: "What if Tirpitz hadn't been sunk/had been raised and then after Germany joined NATO, she was given back to Germany to re-build their fleet arond her as their new flagship? If she had been modified by the Germans like we modified the Iowas, what would she conceivably look like?"

Well, after using a sprue of Modern Ship Weapons, and then scratchbuilding a helicopter deck for her this is what she looks like now:

I've had several naval personel and former naval personel  tell me hat it is very believeable.

Someday, I'd like to do something similar to the Nagato, and possibly the HMS Vanguard.
