Lee Perry class
Posted by Gwitness on Saturday, February 25, 2006 1:16 PM

Hi...I just got this kit.....and have serveral questions.

The kit is an odd scale 1-300. It came without any decals and some of the smaller parts are rather clunky......question is..what is available in terms of decals and photoetch?

next question is....proper colors, FS numbers for hull and deck colors...as well as antifouling color?

This is a build for my wife...she helped build the Perry class Frigates at the Seattle Todd shipyards and wants a model of one...so I'm seeking to do the best I can on this one.

You're right it is an odd scale.   Whats worse is that the kit is actually a mix of scales.  The hull is 300-ish and the superstructure is 350-ish.

There are no deicated replacement details for it in the 300 scale range.   There are plenty of USN details available in 1:350 scale, but nothing for a Perry per se.    In 1:350 scale, Gold Medal Models makes some hull numbers and deck lines.   Iron shipwright makes deck lines, flags, and division/squadron marks.

The specification for modern US Navy Haze Gray is 27260 -  Testors MM Neutral Gray is 37260. a good match.  I prefer to add a drop or two of white to the mix.  For decks - MM Gunship Gray and Engine Gray for new flight deck.  My favorite antifouling red is American Tradition Red Primer from Lowes.   White Ensign Models Colourcoats line of paints is an excellent out of the bottle match for each of these colors

Using 1:350 details on a 1:300 scale kit will look about 12.5% small [(350-300)/300].   As a matter of personal choice I try to not mix scale differences more than 10%.   However, the choice is yours.

The better large scale kits of the Perry-class frigate are 1:350 scale resin & brass.  Yankee Modelworks makes a long-hull Perry sold as the Reuben James.   Irin Shipwright makes a short-hulled Perry sold as the Clifton Sprague.   The 1:700 scale Perry by PitRoad is also very nice

Thanks....I'm hoping that the details I want to add [life rails. helo deck netting, radar..etc] wouldn't look too out of place if I use  1/350 parts.  I have the skywave/pitroad kit with the GMM detail set.....a few years ago I would've attempted it...My eyes just aren't that good anymore.

I agree with Ed, it might look a little funny, but consider what it will look like without those little details. If you're building it for your wife, and by extension you, I would go ahead and add the photoetch just for the "wow, neat" factor if nothing else. It still amazes me how much better a ship model looks if you add some of the railings, not even all of them. Remember, it's your model - you'e the only one you have to please.

Ahh..right you are.....I just didn't want the detail parts to be so obvious that  it would look like 1/350 parts being used on a 1/700 kit.....Since the kit is "1/300ish"....for my needs, 1/350 details and decals may fit the bill.

eta......I've seen pics of black antifouling paint on the Frigates...now it seems to me, It would be red with a black boot top...anybody know for sure what is correct?....btw...the photos I have of Perry class ships on the ways are not real definitive as to which color it is.

You are correct...red antifouling paint on the lower hull with a black boot topping (sonar dome rubber window is also black).
