Carrier Aircraft
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, March 10, 2006 8:32 AM

Does anyone know if there are either 1/700 or 1/350 scale aircraft from the '50's for carrier models (Panthers, Banshees, Skyraiders, etc)?

If so, who makes them & where can I order them?

Thanks for the help!

Chris

For 1/700, it is getting slim since White Ensign has stopped making 1/700 planes.  They have Cougars, Cultass, Skyray, Skyraiders, all the 1950 era helicopters, and the Fury, but as I said, better call on them now to see what they still have since they discontinued making these.

I made my Panthers by cutting the wings of their Cougars and making a wing set from a strip of white styrene and a drop of CA for the wing tank.

Skywave and Pitroad once made white metal F9F Panthers, but again, these are getting hard to find.  Fujimi still makes the AD Skyraider in their 1960's carrier aircraft set.  I have gotten mine from the auction sites.

Dragon announced that they are releasing a "Korean War" airwing later this year that hopefully will have the forgetten Banshee along with the AD1, F4U-4/5 Corsair, and Panther.

1/350 Scale is even more scarce.  Both WEM and Corsair Armada seem to have discontinued the Skyraider, so its getting hard to find one.  Corsair Armada does make a really nice F9F Panther in this scale.  Other than the Panther, I have not found anyone who is making planes from this era in this scale.  Not enough demand I guess.

I have a Dragon 1/700 U.S.S. Independence kit that I bought quite a few years ago.  It is, of course, a re-boxing of the Skywave kit.  I don't know whether the Skywave boxes contain exactly the same parts; I suspect they do (except for the lower hull components that Dragon added).  Anyway, the one I have contains two aircraft:  a Devastator and a Panther.

For Independence modelers that doesn't make much sense.  (I don't think either of those aircraft ever operated from that class of ship.  If they did, they certainly didn't do it often.)  But the things are there.  I don't suggest running out and buying a dozen Independence kits in order to build up a Panther squadron, but if you find one in a flea market, or a friend happens to have one....

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

I second getting what you can while you can from White Ensign Models in their 1/700 aircraft. I took a WAG at what I would like to do in the future, and ordered accordingly last week. Just remember to get the accompanying PE set for props, wheels, tail hooks and the like.

First, let me correct things a bit: White Ensign Models is NOT dropping their line of 1/700 scale aircraft. But we ARE thinning it down. We will be discontinuing all non-naval aircraft as existing stocks sell out. Some naval aircraft may go out of production from time to time as we evaluate whether it's worth keeping them in production. For example, there hasn't been much incentive to keep 1950s carrier aircraft in stock because there simply weren't the carrier kits out there that called for them. That may change, with upcoming kits on the horizon. If potential sales warrant it, we can always put any item back into production. Keep in mind that we have to order minimum runs of 50 bags, and it doesn't do us any good to have stock hanging on the racks for 10 years (which has been the case with some of our 1/700 aircraft). That said, if anyone wants to put together an order for 50 bags of any individual aircraft, we'll run them!

Cheers,

Blame me for the misunderstanding. I'm the one who sent WEM an e-mail pleading for 1/700 PBYs (which still stands) and got the reply from Carol that they were not adding new lines and were discontinuing some. Sorry for the confusion!

Sorry John, hee hee!  For me, 50's era aircraft being discontinued is a big concern since I started a big conversion project.  Then again, I called and you still had what I needed on the shelf, abite some of the last of it for now.

Cheers,
Scott

It seems to me a lot of people have seen the "Bridges at Toko Ri" lately.
