Heller La Belle Poule Q
Posted by jwintjes on Saturday, March 11, 2006 1:36 PM
I hope I'm not taxing everybody's patience by asking what might have been answered already several times, but a search didn't produce any results. Just the other day I saw the Heller La Belle Poule at my local hobby shop, about which I know nothing, nor do I happen to have any information on the original, which - going by the model - seems to have been a large perhaps 1820s to 1830s sailing frigate. The box top picture of a built up model surely looks nice and rather plausible, but of course that's not worth much.

I am building La Belle Poule. ( If you see my thread below about the Eagle, you can see the hull in the background of one of the pictures ) There are a couple of threads here where we discussed this ship. Otherwise, there is not much info about her on line. As far as the kit goes, I like it a lot. The pieces are well molded, and there is little flash. Many parts do have ejector pin marks on them but they can be cleaned up. The kit is molded in two colors, black and brown. There is a set of vacuum formed sails ( yuk ) and a set of decal flags. My kit did not include rigging thread but it was opened when I got it. The directions indicate that thread is included. Also in the box is Heller's loom for ratlines. Based on what I have seen in this forum, it is useless. The directions are pictures only, no text. The rigging part of the directions are useless.

At this point, I say get the kit. It is a very beautiful ship. I sometimes think I am the only person in the world building it. So if you get it, we can make it a two person group build.

Thanks for the answer - I finally got around finding the other threads; it turned out I didn't take into account the search to be case-sensitive... *banging my head on the desk in frustration*

I now have a much less clouded picture of what to expect and what to do. It indeed sounds like an interesting project.
