Thanks guys, this is already helping me out.  Though I haven't started yet, so if you have a different technique, please post it! Big Smile [:D]

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y43/leyhaw/wood.jpg  I don't know if this will help you much. This is my first sailing ship model...USS Constitution. After carefully aligning the decks, I sanded them and painted them Tamiya Black, spray can. Then painted them Tamiya Light Sand...and followed by Tamiya Camouflage Grey. Then I lightly sanded the surface to expose the Black detail. If I was to aggressive, too much brown showed. The rest of the coloring came from pastel chalk applied to separate planks. On the Deck, this is what I done (thanks to everyone that offered suggestions)
3 coats of paint.
First coat used Model Masters #4249 #4 Brown
Second coat used  Model Masters  #4735 Wood
Third, I went back to the brown and painted a few individual planks. Didn't get facy, they will get comvered up again.
Forth coat, used Model Masters #4697 Tan for final coat.
Lightly sanded surfaces to desired effect.

I am by no means an expert, but here are my latest attempts.

First is La Belle Poule. I started with a coat of Modern desert sand out of a rattle can. I was appalled by the results. It looked yellow! I then added a coat of Future. Then I made a wash of  Raw Umber acrylic paint, water and soap. I brushed it on and wiped it off with a q-tip. Here are the results. The one picture looks more yellow. The actual look is somewhere in between.

My second attempt is the USCG Eagle. I started with a coat of Modern Desert Sand 9Yep, still paint in that can.) Next came a coat of Future. Then I mixed a sludge of Burnt Sienna, water and soap. This did not go on very well so I trashed it and mixed some Burnt Sienna with Retarder Medium. That went on much better. I think it looks better on the smaller scale.

I'll probably try something different on the next ship, but stick with the basic process of a light base coat and a darker overcoat,, maybe with a little gray streaked in. Hope this helps.

Pictures of your decks?

I am going to start my model of the HMS Victory next, finally, and now I need a little help here.  I'm obviously going to be painting the decks first, but I am positive that a coat of wood paint isn't going to cut it for me anymore.  So, could some of you who are more experienced (basically anyone who has painted one recently) post some good close-ups of your technique for painting wooden decks?  I've been searching the threads and have found pretty good descriptions of how to paint and weather a deck, but very few pictures of the end result.

To go with them, please include a small description of the process you used.

I have seen a  couple good threads that will help me with the various aspects of the ship, such as the rigging and furled sails, but painting the decks are still a little hazy to me.  Thanks in advance!
